Criteria for a Good Student Care Service (BASC)
-
CONTENTED:
I think most schools are aiming for this if they have the space because it also means another source of income for the school (rental). & more parents would register their children in their school for convenience.Wouldn't it be a better idea if all primary schools can run their own BASC. They can always get the private sectors to run the BASC in their schools. This way, i guess we parents can have a peace of mind at work w/o having to worry about our children safety to BASC and making special arrangements when the child has CCA and extra classes later on. With BASC within the school compound, our children can just walk back to the BASC classrooms after their CCA or extra classes. This way, they will not need to leave the school compound and chances of them caught in an accident while crossing the road or caught in the heavy rain is definitely minimise.
Anyway, i will be doing my registration in for my girl this July and would be sourcing for a good BASC. Any recommedations from parents residing in Sembawang neighbourhood?
However, I have spoken to parents before and some of them expressed concerns about having their children stuck in the same school environment the whole day. Also, because they may be so comfortable with the place, they may not report to the BASC on time (go off to play with friends in the field, etc).
Another factor to consider: Most BASC found in schools close early as the school gate closes easrly. Which means that parents may need to rush to pick up their children by 6.30pm or maybe earlier, depending on what time the school closes their gates. Those single session schools usually close their gate earlier.
I guess there are pros & cons.

I am searching high and low for a new BASC near my girl’s school (Bedok Green Primary). Her school don’t provide BASC due to lack of facilities. Currently she is in another BACS that is about 2 streets away which I am worried if she needs to make her own way there if she needs to stay back for extra lessons.
The BACS that she is attending now is quite old and there are only 2 teachers to about 20 students.
I had been calling the nearby childcare centres that are listed on mcys website that claims to provide student care service but the response that i got is that they do not provide currently. -

Hi,
Any of your dd/ds are attending basc within the school premises?
My dd's school has a basc and I am planning to put her there.
I was told by the basc in charge that they will be using the classroom for the after school care activities, unlike those basc which operates at the hdb void decks, students are more in a relax environment (no need to wear shoe all day).
Would appreciate if anyone here can share your experience

I visited one BASC, with intention to place my kid there. My kid is in afternoon session. I noticed that the BASC settings is quite like a classroom, with students doing work at the desks. I was wondering if a kid goes there in the morning, sit at a desk in BASC (doing some work, most probably) till noon time, then proceed to school, continue to sit at a desk…will the kid be too exhausted by late afternoon, affecting her concentration in school? Any one has any comments to share?

Two important criteria: the teachers must be able to manage the class well, and the students must be able to rest.
Class management is important. I’ve heard stories from my students who attend student care centres that suggest that the teachers in those centres don’t give two hoots about what the children do. They fight regularly and use vulgarities at one another. I’m not sure how such a student care can help the child.
The student care teachers should also give the children rest time. Children need to rest after a long day at school. They can take a nap, read a book, do some fun enrichment activities or do their homework. If anyone has read the "Seven Habits of Happy Kids" or "Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens", the last habit to practise is "Sharpen the Saw", which means to allow the child time to recharge. Without time to recharge, the child’s battery will burn out soon. His lack of rest will affect his concentration in school, which, ironically, is what he should be focussing on.
I am not in favour of student care centres. It’s just my humble opinion. Of course, I understand that not every family has a maid or parent-in-law at home to supervise them. In that case, I encourage parents to look out for the above two criteria before enrolling their children at a centre. -
