Yes, you are right, sometime negative result might not mean bad. For my boy when he was not selected by RI for the selection test he told us that he will study hard and score well in the PSLE to approve RI that they make a mistake of not giving him a chance for the selection test. And he has been focusing in his revision for the past 1 month and now he said that he hope to make it for the EEIS Scholarship..
I believe that your boy will do well in his PSLE.

How I envy those of you with a child so self motivated and matured in his thinking!

I am very sad , I have been patiently waiting for my daughter to 'wake up' from her nonchalance towards such an important milestone in her life. Until today, she is not willing to put in effort in her study....she continues to take long afternoon naps and did not make any effort to revise for the PSLE, only doing school homework. Even then, she would be very restless and 'can't sit still' and continue to make very very careless mistakes that goes to show she is not focus when doing the work. :x
All the nagging & 'counselling' from us fall on deaf ears. :stupid:

There must really be something not right in my parenting style. Perhaps, I have been too laissez faire in the management of my kids. It's only about 1 month to PSLE...Though blessed with intelligence, she did not make good use of it, sigh...God only help those who help themselves.

Hi Fiary, don't be sad. I don't think there is anything wrong with your parenting style. Just that different kids mature at different timing. Maybe with her relax mood, she can excel better .... I have heard of kids so stress in PSLE that mind block and black out. I have also seen quite a number of my girl's classmates, all the while doing very well but drop in PSLE. Look at the brighter side ... I have also met a guy, he was in neighbourhood secondary school, excel well and got into NUS, major in Math.

Don't just think that top sec schools are good, you need to look at the other side too. Stress level is super high, work load is very heavy. The most important the chid is happy. No problem. Although my girl did not go through DSA last year, but last year this time till end of Dec, was the most stressful period in my life ! I don't think I can forget .... haha I waiting for your good news !

So similar to my situation!

I've been 'counselling' my son since mid of p5 and counting down the months, now weeks, and he is still just waiting to play football.. at school
and at home.

Your emoticons reflect exactly how I feel. As the date draws near, the feelings are so intense, right? Yet they are still chin chin chye chye.
At least yours is doing her school work. Mine has alot of school work not done!

I too have been thinking if I have been too laissez fair. He had a very easy time up to p4, not even assessment books or school papers. And now when he needs to put in the effort they are not used to it. You mentioned she is intelligent - this is one possible downside to intelligence esp when they are in mainstream. My son is also bright but the attitude isn't quite there.

Not just myself, his school teachers are also waiting and hoping he'll mature in time for PSLE!

There is also the hormones at this stage. It partly explains why some of them are like that. For my son, he has always been playful and not very motivated at school.

So you are not alone. Someone here is going through exactly the same as you. It is true that not all mature at the same time, but the problem is in Singapore, it determines many things e.g. which sec school. Altho some are successful in neighbourhood schools, we know that being in a school surrounded with motivated kids are better for them.

We really need to pray. There is so much we can do. They have to take it up from there. It is hard, isn't it!?

Now there is a yo-yo craze in school. I just told him off for spending his free time playing with a makeshift yo-yo he came up with using lego parts. I hv seen him playing it in the afternoon, after dinner and now before sleeping. He rebuked that he had already finished his sch work. I asked him if he knows he is not going to score A* just by completing sch assigned work and nothing extras. I think it hit a spot and now he has gone to bed grudgingly.

Couldn't agree with you more. Hope this experience will give my son the internal motivation to work hard. He hates to memorise and basically lives on his wits and logical mind.

Sigh...how I wish he was like my eldest, but each child is different, and we just try our best to help them reach their individual best.

Hi Fairy, pls don't be sad, for at least you have a backup plan -NJC. Did your daughter go for the camp? How is it ? have you heard from them?

Maybe he has been motivating himself secretly in his heart without your knowing ? Slowly, I have been discovering that in my girl. One eg. there is this fried food day once a week in school canteen. Once she told me, the fried chicken was very nice but she won't eat it everytime. She would only eat it to reward herself if she has achieve something good for the week. Maybe your child is motivating himself through yoyo.
