I have been taking this P1 registration very lightly until this year. I have never been bothered as I have been thinking to put my DS to the school which is just located next to where I lived. (seriously just only less than 200m away). But the situation has changed this year. The school is conducting balloting. I have never seen many children around my area beofre. Suddenly, there are many children applying for the school. My guess is parents are renting houses around the area. Is this legal? How long must they stay in that address before they can use them for registration?
My hub and I are thinking to put DS to our old schools. But situation changes again. There have been talks about change in Phase 2A process.(Thanks to our FTs and KS parents making noises in newspaper, to grassroots and to Minstry over this phase 2A.)
Isnโt P1 registration is such an easy process? Just bring the necessary documents and register your child!! Why is the situation becoming so complicated? My parents had never had such difficult situation. Why? because there were fewer FTs and the FTs around then were truly talented. They had the money to send their kids to international school.
Seeing the stressful situation my colleagues are going through this year heightens my anxiety. With more children registering next year and not to forget PRs (God, know how many of them). Adding on to my stress is the fact that my DS has no sibiling to qualify for Phase I. In this year, about 35% of the children got into the school during Phase1. While in popular schools, more than 50% of children gone to the school druing Phase1. Iโm counting down 11 months before the start of 2013 in-take registration. -

The regulation only states that you must use the address where you live in. It doesn't state how long you must stay in that address before you can use it for P1 registration. -

Targeting CHIJ Katong under 2B, more than 2km.
lucky you able to join in at phase 2B! i am tempted to put my girl in there too.. but i'm outside 2km. -

Until there is a proposed change to the 2A, nothing has changed.
While the preference is to send our children to the school nearest and our preferred choice, we need to get it out of the way that it is a given.
My parents never had the same problem for sure.
Lets not too stress out on the phase 1 take up rate, first study the statistic for the past few years on the TUR for each phase and if there is a concern for the recent 2011 TUR as compared to the previous 4-5 years.
Secure the best chance at 2A (anyway is the complaints direct at PV - 2B?), more likely than not this phase doesnt need balloting. then monitor the situation at the school nearest to your place whether you stand a good chance to secure at 2C within 1km, statistics although not 100% accurate, can give you a good gauge.
I am sure alot of parents here can help you assess your chances as well. -
hi zoolet,
since yr child entering P1 2013, should be quite safe.
donโt think government making any changes to Phase 2A, 2B, 2C so soon (since PAP just recently won the election). One year down the road - coming July 2012 is quite fast.
if election come round the corner 4 or 5 yrs later, normally during that time to garner more votes to win peopleโs heart, there could / might be changes introduced to MOE P1 registration process. More likely to be affected are those kids registering for Primary 1 2015, or 2016.
so you are quite safe. The earlier your child enter P1, safer ! (Ye Chang Meng Duo) -
hi zoolet,
dun worry so much.
this is my own personal opinion only (anyway, i also could be wrong) .
if MOE were to introduce changes to P1 Registration one fine day, so as to appease the anger and frustation of so many parents out there today ...
a) i think Phase 2A will still remain.
but may combine P2A(1) and P2A(2) together into one phase, just make it simple - only Phase 2A. No more further breakdown into (1) and (2) so confusing.
b) but the P2B Parents volunteer scheme could be abolished.
in turn - who is going to offer true, altruistic Parent volunteer work ?
will be those parents whose kids have already got in, and are currently studying inside the school. Only this group of parents can truly sincerely, honestly offer true, noble, altruistic work.
anyway, there are already some schools not interested in accepting outside PV, because they don't wish to create misleading confusion. Because the Principal in respective school forsees that demand always exceed supply. Very hard to control.
example:
=======
- Maha Bodhi don't accept outsiders PV.
- MGS don't accept outsiders PV.
If any PV work needs to be done, they rope in existing parents from their school, whose kids are currently studying inside the school.
- SCGS
same thing as MGS.
only in extremely exceptional cases whereby a much highly sought after skill is required - SCGS is highly selective of outsider PVs (an extremely small group, and effectively well managed, under control).
c) the clans
power inside the clan schools will remain.
because the clans are the founders, the builders for the school.
they are the ones that lay down each brick painstakingly for the school many years ago, one by one. Without the clan, means there would be no school.
besides, their history is extremely rich (if you read up).
goes back to decades of history built up to establish the reputation of the school.
but how clan heads discuss with MOE, not sure.
d) the Catholic schools and the Christian Methodist, Presbyterian mission schools.
power inside Catholic and Christian mission schools willremain.
because the Catholics and the Methodist huge movement are the founders, the builders of the school.
without the Catholics backup support, without the Methodist movement, there won't be such school. They are the ones that build up the name and reputation for the school, inculcating excellent moral character values building in a child.
but how the Heads of these religious schools come together to discuss with MOE high ranking officials in authority - how to allocates places for Phase 2B and Phase 2C, that remains a big question mark ? -
Thank you very much to all parents for your encouragement and advice. Iโm crossing my fingers nothing will change. It looks to me 2013 in-take may be tough due to the number of children. There are limited choice of schools in central within 1 km. The other option we have is to move and stay with our parents where there are more choice of schools. We leave the good hand of God after we have registered.

Iโm crossing my fingers thar nothing will change as well. I never knew how stressful this is until now.
I have a problem though. I am an old girl from rosyth but I have studied there from P3 to P6 instead of from P1. Does that mean I donโt qualify for 2A2?
