I charge about there for beginners (and am more qualified than what you mentioned above). So I guess it all boils down to individual teachers. No governing body. Having said that, the teacher you mentioned travels to your place whereas I don't. So part of your payment goes into the traveling expenses and traveling time.

Would you charge more for teaching young ones like 3yo? I just started my son(not yet 3yo) with one and the school said for this age should be with senior teacher so that's just under $180/mth. I must say she was very good with him and he responded well too

No, I don’t charge according to age. Whether I am teaching an adult or a child, regardless of age, it’s the time and effort I put in that I base the charges on, though teaching method would be different according to age and learning style.

If your child is responding well to the teacher, then I guess the amount you are paying is justified.

I was thinking to start him only after 3 at least, but he has been playing tunes on his own for quite a while already, so thought to let him be guided to play properly and with 2 hands. I did not have too much hopes and had visions of him running around the room during lesson and refusing to do anything the teacher asked, like how he is with me. Thankfully he did none of those.

When it’s with an outsider, a "teacher" it’s a slightly different story as compared to being taught by parents. I am lucky enough to be able to handle my daughter since she started. Have just started on my son too but I can see that with him, it is more tricky. haha!

It does tend to be more tricky with boys, right? ;D That's why I didn't think to start music for any of my boys, but they all end up better than the girl even though they started learning much later. The youngest one has an early start bc of them, I guess ... being a copycat to what all the older siblings are doing. Anyway,, I can't consider myself an \"insider\" or \"outsider\" since I am not a music teacher myself. hehe.

My kid’s piano teacher charges $70 per hour. She is quite patient and from what I see, she seems to be able to teach well.

                      Hi JCE,
Do adjust your fee if your student is too mischievous?

Haha! No. But I do tell the parents something like "after teaching your kid, I have to drink a bottle of chicken essence otherwise I’d faint"! Or if things are really getting out of hand and I have tried my best to control over a period of time then I’d say "bye-bye" to the kid
