No such thing as Guarantee. The probability of passing exam is always less than 100%. I overheard an experienced teacher commenting, 'Have teach for over 10 years, how is it possible to have students who never had fail exam once?' .... or something along that line. -

Haha! No. But I do tell the parents something like \"after teaching your kid, I have to drink a bottle of chicken essence otherwise I'd faint\"!
Add that to their fee -
There is beginner & grade 1, what is the diff ?
For 6yo & 10yo, how long it takes to go for grade1 exam ? -
Taz, beginner is like “foundation course” where notes and rhythm are taught in a simple manner and pieces are simple and short 2-liner sort of thing with hands taking turns to play. Grade 1 pieces are longer and requires more co-ordination between hands.
As to how long it’ll take, I think it has been previously mentioned that factors such as how fast the child can learn and absorb is important. How long the child is able to practice is also another factor. Generally, a 10 yr old should be faster than the 6 yr old because learning power is better and co-ordination is better too.
Peanut_butter, I have been teaching FT for more than 10 yrs now and if you add on the PT teaching, I would have clocked more than 20 yrs. Have not had any student failing but the reason for that is, I will not enter anyone whom I deem not up to scratch or I will withdraw the student if he/she is not prepared. So far, I have withdrawn only one because he was not willing to put in the time and effort even with the exam just 3 weeks away. It was a grade 8 exam and he couldn’t even play the pieces in full, let alone correctly and with musicality. Scales, needless to say, was just as bad.
It takes two hands to clap and as a teacher, I can only do so much, the rest is up to the student to follow-up what has been taught. I know of teachers who get the students who don’t practice at home to come for extra lesson every day - ie these lessons are for practice and not so much for teaching and students are required to pay for these lessons. The amount to be paid at the end works out to be a substantial amount -
