RI or HCI

... only one school keeps emphasising it at the open house year after year (hint : not RI)
I was just marvelling about the number of parents who fervently sing its praises even before their sons get in...
I am indeed eyeing RI for my boy. I have done research on the school, attended its openhouse, check out its environment, talk to students/ex students of the school and whatever you can think off.
I have come to the conclusion that there is this \"X\" factor in the Raffles education that brings really out the potential of your child and made him to excel and do his best.
Maybe that's is what one of the forummer here is alluding to as \"value-add\" ? -

I do not think that the input quality is exactly the same. For some unknown reasons, most of the Gep students ( if you consider them to be top of the crop ) still prefer RI to HCI. Also, I think the top PSLE scorers are also in RI. ( I maybe wrong. )Pen88n:
Does it really matter how many president scholars or medalists the school produces? Majority of the kids in the school are not the president scholars or medalists.
We are comparing RI to HCI, not some 3rd rate schools....of course then academic performance matters .
Students in both RI and HCI are creme of the crop, therefore they are potential schorship or Olympaid medal holders. Again we are not talking about lower ability children here.
The fact remains, given the input quality is the same, why does RI produces so much better output quality than HCI ?Doesn't this say about the school's ability to value-add ? Isn't that important for parents ???
So in that case i do not think it is right to say RI add more values to the students than HCI. I would only say that both are good schools. -
just to put things in perspective wrt so-called input quality :
data copied from MOE.
for 2011 Sec 1 admission t-score:-
HCI 257/273 (lower/upper), median = 260, mean = 261
RI 259/275 (lower/upper), median = 263, mean = 264
I believe DSA condidates’ score are not reflected above -
Yes, DSA scores are not reflected in the MOE data. So you won’t have the top scorers from GEP and Academic DSA and the lower Sports DSA scores reflected.

I am suprised that you say that the input quality of HCI is so lower...do you have data to substantiate what you are speculating ?
According to vk2010's entry, it seems that the admission upper/lower T-score between the 2 schools only differs by 2 points...surely that would mean that the input quality is almost the same. -
EthanEthan:
You are basing the input quality on PSLE COP from MOE. It has been pointed out that this COP does not include DSA students who have been accepted into the school at DSA phase. Take for instance, the 2010 top PSLE scholar is in RI, but his highest score is not reflected in the RI COP from MOE, thus that affects the mean / median as well.PiggyLalala:

On a yearly basis, RI has about 7 classes of GEPpers, totalling about 160-180 GEPpers. HCI has about 3 classes, approx half the number 80+-. How can the intake quality be similar?
Nonetheless, I personally feel that both are good schools. There is no need for rivalry amongst the schools. Education should be about developing the potential of each individual student. Be it a top top or an average school, as long as the school can provide the most value-add to your kid, it is a good school for your kid. We should respect the value-add each school can provide for its students. -

Like Pen88n, I feel that both are good schools and that the school that can add the most value and joy to my child, then that school is the best school for my child. I dont really look at the number of president scholars or the number of medalists that the school produced as I know my child will not be one of them.

Now I really know that RI really attracts the top of the creme in Singapore. Seems like a huge number of top students choose to go there. -
Why argue so much about which is a better school. No so easy to seperate them ok. Just base on your criteria and make an informed decision. Either one you wont get wrong. If undecided can just choose either one nearer to your home.
If you think your kid is a top scholastic material, any good school will do. Why fret over such mundane matter? -
Actually this is a good problem to have and can easily be resolved. Just choose the one nearer to your house to eliminate time wasting travelling over a 6-year period. If your house is situated in btw, choose one to your liking, no need to deliberate as both are good choices.
If you think you are a scholar, you will win one from either instituition. If you are not, give you the best RI’s subject teachers from yr1-6 with tuitions from top pte tutors in every subject and you will still fail to win.
So no need to make anyone angry over this mundane issue.
