Has she attended the Open Houses of both schools? If not, do. It'll give her an idea of what the two schools offer and the school culture and environment. The two schools are rather different in terms of culture and ethos.

My niece had a hard time choosing last year too. She was in Aitong and she said there were a lot of \"canvassing\" from NYGH when she was p5. As she was one of the top few students in Aitong, she was invited to attend NYGH Math workshop and their leadship camp.

However, she chose RGS as she felt that she wanted to be in a environment that reflected the muti-cultural society that we were in. She was also aiming for US universities rather than Chinense U.

And something else that I found rather amusing --- she felt that the NYGH girls were too \"cheena\".

That's her decision but your child may have a different perspective

I have spoken to a colleague whose son is in HCI. Her comment was that HCI nowadays stresses a lot on being better \"than the other school\" academically nowadays. I wonder in their zest to be competively better, will they add on unduly more academic pressures on their students ?

I believe RI is no less competitive but with most RI student that I have intereacted with, I find that the competitiveness is \"self-movtivated\" rather than externally induced. There is this \"X\" factor in the Raffles program that makes their students want to excel to their best ability.

My niece graduated from RGS... Also on scholarship at some US uni... Recently she's on some exchange programs in different countries, including China.
So a bit ironic if she did not spend time to develop her mother tongue back in sch.
End of the day, our kids shld have a global exposure... Hopefully they know China is in our globe.

I work in an MNC and my colleagues are diverse from RI/RGS/RJC/HCJC e.t.c

We do a lot of business arouond the world, including China and those colleagues from the \"English\" schools have equally no problem at all dealing and conversing with their China customers and counterparts in Mandarin.

It is a misconception that students in RI/RGS will be weaker in Mandarin. THey have one of the highest standards of Chinese in any secondary schools around in Singapore..plus their multi-cultural and global perspective is a real plus in a MNC.

What is your definition of \"cheena\" if kids nowadays prefer to choose RI/RGS which is not \"cheena\"?
I dun understand the \"cheena\" factor.
My 1st thought would be the language standard.

You do not have to get me, and I don't have to get you as well.
I did not define cheena....that's what my niece told me.
You will have to ask the youngsters themselves why they have that impression.

Conversational Mandarin should be okay for most kids who went through all those years of Chinese. But, my experience tells me that students who took HCL definitely can handle reading and writing more competently in the language, at the level required in my industry (legal).
