I know that those letters starting with a,e,i,o,u, will need to use "an" instead of "a".
Eg, an apple, an umbrella, an uncle
but why when we say University, the book says "a" university?
can anyone explaine to me ?

I'm no English expert. But I suspect we use \"an\" only when the vowel \"u\" makes the \"ah\" sound instead of the \"you\" sound.

Eg.
an umbrella
an uncle
an ultraman
- versus -
a university
a union
a unicorn

I should have thought both (2) and (3) are correct. Both make sense, and both conform to the parallelism rule that the same or equivalent grammatical form should follow paired connectors.

When going through this question with dd, I told her the answer should be (2) but the answer from the assessment book was (3). If such question is being set in school, will the teacher accept both answers since there’s no way in the sentence that will imply either one is the better answer.
