Coping with Primary 1

It's very strange. I was speaking with another parent who has kids in upper pri abt show and tell. She told me parents need to help their kids. I asked won't the teaher guide them on the technique/skills needed before the actual show and tell like role play? She said there are so many kids, how to invovle all? In my mind I was imagining the teacher would vet through each child's selection, then have rehearsals before the actual show and tell with the grading. I guess I was wrong.
shdnt this be the way.... then at least the child wld know where he/she hv gone wrong...
i mean yes parents do play a part but the teahers shd be involved too right?
\"Ideally\" - the teacher is supposed to guide the children on the topic & its content but as in most \"real life\" case, the teacher will not be able to guide all the 30 pupils in the class :shock:

:nailbite: when I heard what the Kindergarten P said,\" ....we are having this story competition for the K2 for the 1st time as we want to prepare the children for P1 curriculum..as some primary school teachers had feedback to us that the K2 children are not \"nurtured\" & ready for P1!\" :shock:
Didn't know that my DD2's story-telling session turned out to be a \"training ground\" preparation time! :siam: -

We pay (yes, through our taxes) for our children to be educated but yet we still have to come home after work to tutor them or spend more money on tuition. I can accept this if your child has a learning disability or is slow in one area but this should be the exception, not the norm. If the teachers don't have time to work with all the children then something needs to change - it shouldn't be left to us.
I come home at 7pm (after leaving the office at 6pm on the dot) - how can I spend time teaching my daughter then when she has to be up early the next morning. It's not fair on me or on her. And in a few year's time I will have three children in primary school....
We need to keep putting the pressure on the relevant authorities and not be afraid to raise it with the teacher and/or the principal. The system should work for the benefit of the children not the school, the teachers or MOE. -

Though some say that its parents' expectations that begets this vicious cycle.
Tuition centers/ qualified pte tutors are laughing all the way to the bank when majority of students are averaging 70 and much higher. Even the so-called slower learning children get left out in tuition classes where individual attention is not always guaranteed. -

We are so much in the same boat. Over here i have a P5 boy who needs lots of help and over there I have a P1 boy who also needs attention. Totally agree, this new system of not having CA/SA is really killing me. My P1 boy is always having 听写，测验，Spelling, Eng and maths tests. Sometimes i just give up and concentrate on my elder boy but when my P1 son brought back the results, I regretted not spending more time with him on his work. :frustrated: It wasn't so difficult with my elder boy.janet_lee88:
The new system of not having CA/SA is killing me for sure, on top of that, her EL/CL is not easy either. I am waving the white flag where her compo writing is concerned...just signed her up for creative writing class starting next Sat. It's at Thinking Cove. Hope she will be able to catch up by end of the year (summative test in Oct).
With both kids attending enrichment now, I would rather stay at home than do any window shopping. See-cannot-buy
is more painful.
It's great there is another mummy experiencing the same torture...P1 and a P5 - one just entered REAL school and another one experiencing a crazy system. The crazy idea of not having CA/SA but tests every 10 weeks is WORST :frustrated: :stompfeet: Every week, it's just doing nothing but learning EL spelling and 听写. I agree, it wasn't this difficult when my older one was in P1...really :siao: now -
I supported the education review petition. I’ve posted on the Education Minister’s Facebook. The class size is 30. What else can I do?

can i check... confirm P1 no more mid & final yr exams? or still hv... but CA/SA still as per norm right?
think i'm gonna get more white hair next yr... (as if i dun hv any now)... -

I think so. DD did not experience any of these stress when in P1 and even now in P2 she seems ok. I think her Chinese enrichment is more stressful.
Yes there were topical tests, but nothing that is so mind boggling, the tests usually consist of 2 -3 pages of questions related to the chapters covered.
The one that both she and I were struggling with was Chinese show and tell and that is cos I am hopeless with Chinese. Even then, with my half baked attempts to guide her and her often inaccurate pronunciation, her scores are still pretty good and the remarks the teachers give are very encouraging.
DS will be going to a different Pr school next year so we shall see if his school adopts a pressure system. -

No more SAs- which is the mid year and year end exam, but each school has its own way of assessing, - Mini tests, normal tests, quizes, show& tell , listening compre, etc...which they will brief you ( how much % weightage for what, how many per term )

For DS - the schools informs dates for higher weightage tests only , the minitests will be informed at the beginning of the term which week it will be held - thats all.
For me this is definitely better, each test is only a small weightage - so no need to feel the tension.
But in some schools the push is more intense - so it depends I guess
As for white hair -
