All about Transferring to Other Primary Schools

jacsplace:
should moe step in and create a transparent system so all schools use one method and all parents are aware of what that method is?
Even if MOE steps in and implement a transparent system, there will still be people who are unhappy about it, regardless what the system is.
For transfers, it is best left to the school to decide. MOE has already set the system for P1 registration. It shouldn't micro-manage.
My two cents. -
phtthp:
Not true, cos by the time GEP result is out, all the vacancies for next year's P1 vacancies are all distributed, with many already in the waitlist. I know of a real case this year. The younger Pri 1 sibling is still in the waitlist Q now that the GEP sibling is 8 months into the course.a) guranteed - provided Mei Mei make it in time for P1 registration under Phase 1 siblings scheme, and kor kor must already be studying at Nanyang. example: kor kor P4 and Mei Mei just coming in for P1.
Guaranteed - should only be meant for the sibling at least 4 academic years younger. -

I agree. MOE shouldn't micro manage.jacsplace:

imagine you are the Principal.
put yourself into the shoes of a Principal from a hot school like:-
Nanyang, Rulang, Ai Tong, Rosyth, Tao Nan, MGS, St Hilda, ACS, South View, etc.
the Wait list (WL) is very long, can be > 100 !
because so many parents kids clamouring to transfer their kid(s) into hot popular school, all supported with 101 valid reason(s).
whenever a precious vacancy arise, sometimes I too wonder - how is the P or the board going to decide? Imagine there are >100 on WL, who are you going to select to give this very precious vacancy to ?
because every parent will claim that their reason(s) for transfer is very urgent and important:-
a)\tsibling with another sibling currently studying inside the school.
b)\tparent volunteers balloted out of phase 2B.
c)\tkids staying nearby the hot school within <1km radius, 1-2 km, but were balloted out during phase 2C.
d)\tkids on wait list displaying outstanding talent(s) in some CCas like -swimming, gymnastics, Sports, Music, etc.
e)\tkids on wait list with good report cards to show, plus good conduct.
f) kids on wait list who encounter bullies in current school, hence initiate transfer.
g)\tcelebrity parents with kids eager to enter hot, popular school.
h)\tany other reason(s).
in view of 101 reasons above, how to expect MOE to micro-manage ?
if micro-manage, means each time whenever a vacancy arises, the P has to disclose the reason (the truth) to the public - why is she accepting this new child into her school & not other people's child, supported by one of the valid reason(s) from above listing.
one more thing - for kids transferring in at Upper primary at late P5, from Term 3 or 4 onwards - is risky.
because there is very little time to get adjusted to the new school environment, new school culture, new form Teachers, new fellow classmates. This may upset his P6 PSLE mental preparation mood psychologically, esp. when the child had grown so used and so familiar with his old school - where emotional bond & ties with fellow classmates and Teachers were already formed.
actually P6 effectively is a very, very short year. At the most, it’s only half a year to 7 months. Around August time frame, the child needs to prepare for Prelim and very soon, PSLE. Thus to me, transfer at late Upper Primary … is risky. -

My DD1 was in NYPS P4 when my DD2 started Pei Chun P1. I tried transferring DD2 to NY, but did not really push hard, I was afraid that she might not be able to cope in NY. Spoken to Mdm Heng once, she said waiting list for Dragon babies very long. Of cause, mission unsuccessful. DD2 still in Pei Chun now, DD1 had moved on to secondary.bebebub:
Is it a guarantee that if kor kor is transferred to Nanyang due to GEP, mei mei will get a successful transfer after P1? Wouldn't the school still look at their waitlist and pick n choose the candidates? It's afterall a very popular school. Just want to caution that there may be a possibility that the siblings may not attend the same school. Just my 2 cents.
Transfer is not guaranteed, although it'll be considered favorably. It also depends on the vacancies available. -
i think you’re wise, remain at Pei Chun.
my friend has a girl at Nanyang. She said P5 onwards, NYPS set Maths paper very tough. Normally her girl score around >90 marks for Maths. But now come P5, she score only around 60+ … make her girl start lose confidence in Maths.
my friend is a Maths tuition teacher. She looked at NYPS P5 Maths, and agreed that it’s set too ‘chim’ a standard … more like P6 paper, instead of P5. And some of the Maths topics - teacher have not even taught yet, yet already tested at P5.
she said this is the normal style of NYPS grilling kids, so that eventually when they reach P6, the kids score and do very well for PSLE. -
curious …
a) do Principal in primary schools allow kids to be transfered at P6 ?
b) if your child is been offered a place at P6, would parents still want to let child transfer ?
the advantage is … although only study at that particular school for a few months, but your grandchild will still be eligible to register child under Phase 2A2 next generation (assuming P1 registration rules remain unchanged). -

Thanks MM, this is indeed the last option if 哥哥 fail to transfer to a co-ed school.Hi, jor,
If you transfer your son from a GEP school to a nonGEP school and if he makes it to the GEP program, you will need to transfer again. Your son will need to adapt to the environment again.
I can see from your earlier post that your dd is doing pretty advanced stuff for her age. It may be better to transfer her to a better school using her P1 results.

220 - 240 is considered average PSLE score.
for entry into an IP school, normally need around >= 250. -

This doesn't only happen for NYPS, it happens for every school. If you read the other threads, you will realise that at P5 CA1 / SA1, most schools are out to \"slaughter\" the kids so as to wake them up that they have to prepare for PSLE in P6 and work hard! Most of the parents who have kids in upper primary or beyond have experienced that \"heart attack\" before. So do to fret, it is the norm in our primary school system!i think you're wise, remain at Pei Chun.
