Are my 3-year old son suitable to take phonics class? We have trained him to read by memorising the words… I think this is the way we are being trained in our school days…so is Phonics classes useful?

        Hi

My 4yo girl has been with ICR for 9 mths. She is placed in Thinking n creative skills class. She still cant figure out all the phonics so I am worried the program is going too slow…or she is not concentrating?? if I continue her , when will she be able to read simple words ?
I am thinking of switching her out but many seems to find the ICR program good, so I am stuck. Any advice?

Is the "Read in a week" program run by Kentridge? I went to their branch but the centre is a tuition centre …

they will learn hw to break up bigger words, pronounce & put them back to read the whole word...

memorising the words may help but pronouciation may be wrong...

              js my opinion.. 😉

Phonics is supposed to help with both pronunciation and spelling, as the idea is to teach the sounds of each alphabet and what happens when they're being put together and the sounds blend together. Supposed to be a lot more effective than simply memorising the spelling like during our time. My sis told me her son (who's going to P6 next year) hardly needs to spend time preparing for his spelling tests thanks to the phonics lessons he went to when he was a toddler.

As for which program is more effective, I think it depends more on which one your child enjoys more? 😛

Thanks all for your kind input. Will try to check out further. In the meantime, more input and feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

poppy15, how do you find the management and teachers there and which part of Yishun is that? I read in some other posts and seems like the management not so good, not sure about the lessons though. I personally called them up quite some time ago and could not reach them. They only got back to me after several missed calls to them over days. 😞

mine is at blk 927, Yishun Central... i called them up only once & they arranged for me to bring DS for a free assessment...

the teacher is Ms Yvonne Seah... i find her very patient & caring... she gives feedbacks to parents on & off... and she always assures parents or give advice..

i too read abt this Read In A Week thingy...abt the negative feedbacks... but if u dun try, u nvr know...

what's negative to others, may in turn be positive when it comes to u.

                    js my 2cts worth... 😉
