Raffles Institution (Year 1-4)

vlim:
Applications to UK and US universities are usually completed by Dec, some earlier depending on courses and universities and that is before the release of 'A' level results. They will usually know the outcome before 'A' level results are released. So, to put in simply, they need to apply with their prelim results and I think the Raffles Diploma will help.Hi mandymummy,
So tt is to day without raffles diploma, the students can only apply to UK/us Universities after they get their A level results?
The above only applies to girls because they enter universities the next yr whereas boys must go army and can apply the following yr or so.

No problem, vlim.
No need to think too much about that now, because in 6 years time, I think the Raffles Diploma thingy may be tweaked. See how well it is received by well-known overseas universities first. -

I would like to find out what is the language arrangement like for RI boys if they are exempted from MT at primary school. Do they choose a third language as their 2nd language? Any knows? TIA.

Are you talking about third languages as offered by MOE, that is French/German/Japanese? If you didn't take a 2nd language in primary school you will NOT be offered the option of taking a third language. This is a standard MOE practice. -

My relative took French in place of MT in Secondary school as she was away for more than 4 years during her primary school years. She had lessons with those taking it as 3rd lang and had to sit for O levels for it. -

If you're exempted because of a learning disability you will not be offered a third language. Strictly speaking, only those who score in the top 10% of the cohort and have taken MT are offered third lang in French/German/Japanese.
From MOE website:

Foreign Language Programmes
Pupils who are ranked among the top 10% of the PSLE and who have a special ability in languages are eligible to apply for approval to study a foreign language (i.e. French/ German/ Japanese) from S1.
Eligible top 10% pupils can apply for French/ German/ Japanese online upon the release of their PSLE results. Pupils opting for Japanese Language are required to have passed Higher Chinese/ Chinese at the PSLE as the standard written form of Japanese uses Kanji (Chinese characters). In the event that the number of applicants exceeds that of vacancies, selection will be based on their PSLE results. To be eligible for the Foreign Language Programme, the applicant OR his father OR his mother must be a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident.
