Comparing Chinese Enrichment (Primary/Preschool)
-
all kumon branches in SG teach English & Maths.
however, only certain kumon branches teach Chinese. Not all.
thus better to ring up, make inquiries at that branch nearest your house, most convenient to you :-

detailed curriculum for kumon Chinese:-

fyi - Chinese teacher at kumon Novena is patient.
she speaks in a nice, gentle voice to pre-school kids.
kumon (Balmoral plaza) also teach Chinese.
usually kids who take kumon Chinese no need to take other Chinese enrichment. Everyday they'll learn Chinese, as they practise on worksheets homework.
however, kumon Chinese worksheets alone is insufficient.
still need to expose child to:-
- read simple Chinese readers / storybooks, plus
- for maximum efficiency, after kumon practice, combine kumon Chinse with Si Wu Kwai Du method everyday.
test your child.
see if child can recognize words. can child read aloud simple short passages from Si Wu Kwai Du series ? Target minimum:- books 1 & 2. set yourself a target time line. Try to complete finishing one book, in 6 to 9 months' time)
if can complete beyond book 2, better still.
after that to advance next stage, read what Tamarind recommend next:-

if can follow through, your child will gradually acquire a natural flair to pick up reading Chinese novels independently, proven by Tamarind and soon laughingcat. -
Where can we get the Si Wu Kuai Du series?
How different is it from the Ji Chu Han Zi series?
Appreciate your clarification, everyone! -
Is Kumon good in teaching Chinese? What is their methodology?

Thanks. Does your fren son show improvement in Chinese after attending Hua Cheng? I am contemplating whether to switch mine from Berries. Find that Berries is not that drilling. It's like learning through play. -
those interested in Si Wu Kuai Du can refer here:-

Was wondering if anyone can comment on Chinese enrichment centres around Bishan area in terms of their teaching method, their teachers and effectiveness etc? My ds1 entering P1 soon, and ds2 will be in K2 next year. Around Bishan like quite a few, so don’t know which to choose, eg:
- Berries (Bishan CPF Bldg)
- Tien Hsia (Bishan CC at St 13)
- Eduplus (Bishan St 11 as well as at St 22)
- Xue Ni (Shunfu Rd) - though this seemed more inconvenient for us
I saw on Eduplus website, they put up some videos of events they organised. Looks interesting, and if they really have these activities, would encourage children to like Chinese more. But would like a good balance of the more serious stuff too.
What about these that is not too far and quite easy to access by MRT fr Bishan:
- Hua (United Sq)
- Han (they seemed to have quite a number of branches, eg YCK cc, AMK Hub, Toa Payoh West cc)
- Skylace (Funan DigitaLife Mall)
I visited Jiang, but I think the environment is a big minus to me, plus I think 3 hr class for my P1 boy too tiring and put him off even before he begins!
