really?? that's interesting.. never realised that..
limlim i know iphone will work with data plan but when in overseas we are not turning on the data plan.. else will be paying thru out nose.. ipad can show direction even without data plan tt's the amazing part.
You're using the 3G version or WiFi only version of iPad?
What App are you using? Is it Google Map? But Google Map requires Data to work.. So, if the iPad is not on 3G data or WiFi.. I'm really surprised if Google Map can work.
Please share more details...... I wanna try it out...  -

So far, I’ve tested Sygic & Papago apps in Malaysia on my iPhone, with 3G & data both turned off, it works all fine on the road. Maps are all stored locally. But these apps are payable…
I’ve yet to come across one that works the same and free. -
I just tried on the iPad. Turn off wifi totally cannot load any map, expect for the last position.
I suspect micolih is actually using 3G model, and the roaming maybe not turned off. Prob you need to check your bills… Or maybe I missed out something. -

I'm using WiFi only model. There's no GPS, so it doesn't make a difference.

w/o signal from the hotspot, it cannot determine location, that it expected.
But the main point it, it does not cache Maps previously loaded and always attempts to d/l fresh data. When data is not available, it will not load any map at all, except maybe a small area of the last position.
So, I suspect, even for 3G models with GPS, althou it can determine the coordinates from GPS, it will not load any map w/o data services, just like the iPhone.
Anyone else tried it? -
wait wait… i check with my fren, as the ipad is hers … mine is iphone cannot work at all without wifi/data… we r using goggle map… then when we r on the way, driving (we r in Penang), she turn on the indicator… and it shows exactly where we were heading, we are so elated and we reached all our planned destination correctly.
not sure abt 3g version or wifi version, ask her and waiting for her reply.
and this is not the first time my fren used this ipad overseas, she did it once in langkawi too. few months back… nothing on the bills… oh… forgot to mention, her ipad doesn’t tie to any subscriber… it’s standalone… she only use wifi at home… -
The issue is not the GPS but map.
The Map apps that come with iOS does not store any map. All maps are downloaded at view, not assessible offline. Thus need data connection (wifi or 3G) to work.
I do believe there are 3rd party apps that offer pre-download maps so that their map apps works offline. -
my fren replied, she said hers is 3G but she turn off 3G. no wifi signal when we are on the road but the ipad itself is sending out signal so the indocator works. she said something like the appl we use in iphone to detect our iphone when we lost it. the maps she preloaded before leaving Spore… and it can display when we r on the road. well… the rest i cant explain too… but jst that ipad has this function that even my fren only realise when we drive overseas… iphone simply cannot display without data/wif/ unless the free apps (which i haven tried) mentioned by limlim

Use Sygic… wonderful stuff… better than the in-built map
