I have two incidents when my kids got ‘lost’.
The first one: DS1 was about 4. We were checking in at Changi Airport, leaving for a vacation. While DH was waiting in line, I went to a shop to buy something. DS1 came along with me. Suddenly, he let my hand go. I turned to tell him to get back to me, but he was gone! In just a couple of seconds he had let go of my hands and I couldn’t see him! The departure hall was not very crowded then. Just slightly busy. I called for him, but there was no response. I called DH to let him know, DH told me to keep calm and that he was probably not far from me. Then I ran round the departure hall calling DS1’s name, and asking people if they had seen him. All i could think of was my son being shipped out of the country! I was in tears when DH called me to tell me that DS1 was with him! That boy had suddenly decided that he didn’t want to go with mummy, and had made his way back to daddy at the check-in counter instead! Total time of disappearance was probably leas than 5 min, but it felt like eternity!
The second one: while on vacation (the same one we checked in for above), DS1 did another disappearing act. This was far more scary. We were staying in some mountain retreat. It was a very quiet place. No cellphone access. No telephones in our hut. It was off-season and so there weren’t many others staying in the nearby huts either. DH had gone out for a couple of hours while I stayed with the kids. DS2 had fallen asleep and I had just finished up with the bedtime routine for DS1. I kissed him goodnight and went to the toilet. I made sure to keep the toilet door open ao I could hear him if he called.
When I emerged a couple of minutes later, his bed was empty! I looked around the room calling his name, but there was no response. I glaced under the beds and in the cupboards, nothing. I looked at the door. It was shut, but I couldn’t be sure I had locked it. Also, it didn’t have a latch, so it could’ve been opened from the inside by DS1. I opened the door and called his name. It was dark outside. I could only hear the chirping of the crickets. I called his name two, three, many more times. Still no response. It was eerily silent. The sky was overcast and there were no street lamps, so there wasn’t even any moonlight or streetlights for me to see if he was standing outside. Just the flickering of fireflies.
I really panicked. But I tried to keep calm. I thought it couldn’t be possible for him to open the door right? And could someone really have sneaked in, grabbed him and run away without him making any noise? I looked around the room again frantically, looking under pillows, blankets, clothes, and even in the suitcases, trying to hold back my tears, fearing the most awful, praying to God, calling DS1’s name, telling him not to scare mummy, and wondering what on earth I was going to do next.
Suddenly, I heard some giggling…and the he was right under his bed!! I hadn’t seen him in the shadows! I burst into tears and hugged him and kissed him and telling him that he should never, never, never play hide and seek with mummy without telling mummy first! I was so relieved. I really really thought that he was kidnapped. It was a horrible horrible horrible feeling. Since then, I’ve been super paranoid about holding on to my kids when we go out and not being left on their own. It’s only now that DS1 in P1 that I feel a bit more comfortable with him not holding my hands when we’re out.
And you know what? Both times I was alone when I experienced my son’s disappearance. DH was not there to experience the fear and dread. So I really felt alone those times. At least those feelings were temporary. I never ever want to experience those feelings for real. -
Yes I agree 1 min seems like eternity!! It happened when he went toilet w maid, younger son with me… Initially still think ok…but aft 5-10mins I really panic… N call DH… He was like #%^**£><~}!! Luckily a kind lady took him to information counter when she saw him running up n down after traffic light outside t.mall!!
Recently also had 1 incident, fil fetch them bk from CC…DS1 walking behind them then he couldn’t find my fil n Ds2 (maybe they at mama shop) then he just walked his way bk to my mil plc (15-20mins leisure walk)… My fil searching for him then call my mil…he was back then… My DS2 the moment he saw me breakdown n cry say gorgor lost! Haiz
Now Everytime I will hold them tightly when I’m outside w them… Especially going overseas… I bought the child safety string w me (haha felt like pulling a dog but who cares)… Paranoid until will dream of him got lost b4 going for hols…
