I think a child need to be expose to other activities besides studies, so I like CCA, just not the TOO competitive part of it. I do not want my kids to be "shu dai zi", no offence.
If a child fails PSLE, there’s Northlight, but I think the school accepts students who failed twice.
If fail then re-take, it’s not something pleasant but it’s really not the end of the world.
If fail, as parents we stand by our kids and figure out what’s next.
A child’s future is not determined by MOE, it just seems that way. -

Its a start and I also like what is see, though I see it as more cosmetic than working on the core issues like difficult syllabus and insufficient teaching materials/resources. And i hope it will not be a long long while ie years later before they start looking into the core issues, at the rate they are going. Though we need to be patient because we cannot rush though the review and they must be thorough, I do hope that they address critical issues first. As it is, the mindset is such that you need to get external resources to do well and this mindset will not be easily reversed unless more it done to the system. At the end of the day, its the psle that matters and as such, these core issues should be addressed first and take center stage.
It's a start. We can only be patient and work with our MOE. -

I feel that CCA is a must. And in my books CCA means a sporting/aesthetic activity, something which involves physical activity. Not CCAs like Robotics, or Science Society or Library etc. I don't want my kids growing up to excel in Math and Science but are nerds or bookworms who can't even pass basic NAPFA. -

Teachers must do all they have to do in school time (and still meet the difficulty standards of the PSLE. And not expect (1) parents to teach outside... and (2) not to have our children attend more supplementary classes.jtoh:

Our children have no time to always attend supplementary classes. Ways must be found to teach more EFFECTIVELY... not do more of the same thing for longer time.
I want my son to PLAY and learn to be HUMAN whilst playing. And that goes for CCA too... CCA must be PLAY not COMPETITION. You should learn there lessons my son learns at the neighbour's house on Sundays when he plays with my neighbour's 15 grandkids.
(1) What do we do when the girls cry?
(2) How NOT to make the girls cry?
(3) How to get people to make up after a quarrel?
(4) How to say sorry?
(5) How to listen?
(6) How to care?
(7) The list goes on.... -
jenao... In the original petition thread, quite a few parents commented that Singapore might lose its competitiveness if MOE made the syllabus easier. Whilst I did not want to too strongly acknowledge this point because I was pushing for a review and did not want this to become an excuse NOT TO REVIEW THE SYSTEM, I do agree that it is a valid point.
I am guessing that MOE might try to fix the inadequate teaching first... and if that is not enough, then to look at the syllabus? My view of it is also that they have found Point of High Leverage to change in changing the way schools will be assessed... But gee... like you, I do wish they had decided to do something about the syllabus too!! -
Effective teaching can be achieved, but it's not easy. Some important factors for effective teaching:
1. Teacher training.
2. School support.
3. Lesson planning.
4. Good teaching materials and effective delivery using sound methodology.
5. Classroom management.
6. Constructive feedback ( verbal, assessment)
7. Motivational strategies.

I propose MOE to seriously consider full day school to allow more time for teaching, homework, sports, CCA and any other holistic activities for character development on a daily basis as part of school programme. Just like the Japanese schools system. Unlike currently many students go home and stay with maid to do homework or tuition if there is no CCA, or some just simply run around in school, kicking ball under no supervision and neglecting their homework.
