Vanilla Cake:
Hi All,
Pls help to provide correct answer for Q25 from 2011 Rosyth Sch P6 Prelim English:
Q25
*snip*
Kelvin (\"he\" in the original passage) came to a deeper rut, and realised that it was the place where he had fallen before. After walking for a distance, he turned again, and looked back. He could no longer see the house at all, the mist had shrouded it almost completely.
(1) veiled
(2) masked
(3) guarded
(4) concealed
There are 2 answers given -> (1) and (4).
Pls help to advise the correct answer.
Thks.
I would go with 4 - concealed - especially together with \"almost completely\". Veil denotes partial cover - eg thinly veiled threat or bridal veil. And would not completely shroud something. -
Hi, can someone help me with the following S&T pls:
Q: "You swim well. You’ll definitely win the competition tomorrow," Mr Tay told me.
Ans: Mr Tay told me that I swam well and would definitely win the competition the next day.
Is the following acceptable:
Ds Ans: Mr Tay told me that I had swum well and would definitely win the competition the next day.
TIA. -

Hi - typically for reported speech the tense needs to move one stage backwards (a very ineloquent way of expressing it but that's all I can thhink of).Hi, can someone help me with the following S&T pls:
Q: \"You swim well. You'll definitely win the competition tomorrow,\" Mr Tay told me.
Ans: Mr Tay told me that I swam well and would definitely win the competition the next day.
Is the following acceptable:
Ds Ans: Mr Tay told me that I had swum well and would definitely win the competition the next day.
TIA.
So present becomes past. Past becomes past perfect.
In this case - The person has not swum yet. The \"You swim well\" a general description about the person's ability to swim. This should translate into \"I swam well.\"
Had swum would be acceptable - if the stem already said \"You swam well\". Perhaps in the context of \" You swam well. The photo finish will definitely show that you are the winner.\"
Here \"had swum\" would be appropriate - as the swimming has already taken place.
Not as succintly expressed as Ridcully but I hope it makes some sense.
Cheers -

Have not given my son this one - may go thru just the S&T tomorrow. Do not want to affect his confidence on the eve of the exam in case he finds it v difficult. For the same reason have not bought any more papers.
This one is tough - it is :
My neighbour has such a ferocious dog that no one dares to visit her.
Good luck to your sister (incidentally, I find you taking such an active interest in your sister's studies very endearing. Well done.)
