Wao..can skip exam?? I think my dd will love it v much. Now she pester me to let her learn either piano, flute or guitarMy DD1 went thru 2 years of JMC and now she is into the 1st quarter of 2nd year of JXC, i.e. to say she will complete 4 years of Yamaha School at the end of 2011 :D.
I can't comment much as I am not a music inclined person but DD1 enjoys her lesson very much. She has the same Teacher from Year 1 to year 3 and only this year switches to another class as her previous class lack of students so was closed.
Many people comment,\" WOW! 4 years with Yamaha so now Grade what?\" I am stunned every time when pop with this question but I told them she has not go for any formal examination yet so NO GRADING! Some people appreciate your reply but some will say,\" NO GRADING?? Then learn for what? Next time how to have Grade 8 and becomes a Piano teacher??\" Errrrr :? I will reply,\" I don't expect my child to learn piano for a living; she learns piano because she loves music and she enjoys playing on the piano. We will go according to her pace and not our demand on her.\"
Haha...usually this answer will put a full stop to the conversation

Hi, I'm a private piano teacher myself and I have to say that the yamaha JMC course really trains kids very well and gives them a good foundation in music (provided that the kid completes the whole 4-year course). Even though the syllabus is different from ABRSM and they are not really trained to take the exam, I find that those who finished JXC are more or less ready for the exam because of their foundation.
Of course, as it is a group course that focus more on training the ear, sight reading skills are compromised. But then again I have a few students who went through the course but are quite good in sight reading (some even better than thouse who went through the traditional system). I guess this is because of the amount parental involvement and also the ear training. Even for those who are not so good in sight-reading, they managed to catch up in the sight-reading with some time and lots of practice. Because of the ear training, those who went through the yamaha system approach reading notes in terms of melody (do,re,mi) instead of 'decoding' and some who have very good inner ear can actually anticipate the next note before seeing or hearing it.
And as the yamaha course focuses on ear training, there are some yamaha JXC students that I've taught who have reached the aural ability of a grade 5-6 standard without taking any exams because of their ability to sight-sing, play by hearing, and to hear chords. And for my students who managed to reach (and achieve) the higher grades, most of them are from the Yamaha JMC course.
True that there is lack of technique for yamaha JMC students, but some of the technical problems (like curving fingers) could be easily spotted and corrected by parents.

My DD is taking the theory on 29 Oct too :hi5: but her practical would be next year.
Have you decided whether to continue with the next level? Apparently there is now 2 different routes if one decides to continue. One is called JAC and another is called JNC. The former includes one group and one individual class while the latter is just a group class.
I didn't attend the last meet-the-parents... not sure if this was ever mentioned to the parents. -

Yes, my DD1 will be taking her theory on 29 Oct too! :hi5:
I have decided to put her with pte teacher coaching as I feel the travelling to and fro to the school very tiring & time-consuming
Spoken with her current JXC teacher and she encourages that too and says it is good to let the child continues to pursue her interest in music even after \"graduation\" from Yamaha JXC

Champion, what is JXC? I'm considering sending my 4 yo DD for piano lessons. But not sure to send her to piano school or get pte teacher. Can advise?

Hi Angelight,
you can refer to this:-
http://sg.yamaha.com/en/music_education/yamaha_music_school/yamaha_junior/
Yamaha Music School offers a 4-year comprehensive music education using its very own unique teaching methods. Designed to start at 4 to 5 1/2 years old, this well-structured course aims to develop your child's sensitivity to music.
Year 1 & Year 2 - Foundation Stage (JMC)
Year 3 & Year 4 - Developmental Stage (JXC)
My DD1 will be completing her Year 4 this Dec and I will switch her to pte teacher coaching w.e.f. Jan 2012
...I have made this decision as the travelling is time-consuming and tiring (as feedback from DD1)
My DD2, who is 6 this year has no formal piano training and she will be starting with the same pte teacher this coming Dec 2011, one month ahead of DD1. I have decided to do so also due to the logistics arrangement of sending/fetching her.
Truly to say, my DD1 has built the foundation since she started with Yamaha.
Above is my own experience to share with you
