Looking for better 2nd & 3rd tier Secondary Schools
-
zeemimi:
yeah, i don't think that anderson belongs to 2nd or 3rd tier sec schs. Their express classes has been producing very good o level results.[/quote]I would certainly think that these schools ARE considered good 2nd-tier schools - Anderson, Yishun Town, Xinmin, Catholic High, SCGS, MGS, St Nics, bc they are not IP schools. The IP schools are 1st-tier.
Yes, it can be surprising how neighbourhood-sounding names have rather high COP. Eg. Yishun Town Secondary School, Xinmin(in hougang), etc. Anyway, Anderson sec has always been a good school lah.phankao:

Xinmin, yes but not Yishun Town which is probably tier 3 at best. -
Edureach:
What do you classify as 2nd Tier & 3rd Tier then?phankao
Xinmin, yes but not Yishun Town which is probably tier 3 at best.
eg.
2nd Tier: 230-250
3rd Tier: 200-229 ???
If that's the case, then both Xinmin (around 235-240 COP for last few years) and Yishun Town (around 233-238 COP for last few years) should be around there, difference by a few marks only. I think most would look at location if they are considering schools around those scores.
and then if looking at location of Yishun, probably Chung Cheng would have a greater draw with it's COP averaging around 230-231 bc there's affiliation to Nanyang JC as well? -

It puzzled me why you think that Anderson, CHS, SCGS, MGS and St. Nic are 2nd tier schools. They are all band 1 though yet to be IP. I don’t think IP or not should not be a factor to consider whether the school is 1st or 2nd tier, should look at the banding. I wld think that schools with COP of 220 to 240 be considered as 2nd tier. -

If that's the case, then are IP schools considered \"premier\"?

And then the rest should just be known by their Banding - band 1, band 2, band 3, instead of having to figure out which are considered 2nd Tier or 3rd Tier - how to classify? -
Do note that Cat High, St Nics and SCGS will soon be IP schools.
MOE Press release 1 Sept 2010
http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/2010/09/more-pathways-secondary-schools.php
MOE will expand the Integrated Programme to seven more secondary schools, namely, Victoria School, Cedar Girls’ Secondary School, Methodist Girls’ School, Catholic High School, CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School, Singapore Chinese Girls’ School, and St. Joseph’s Institution. These new IP schools will offer both IP and O-Level tracks, so that late-bloomers or those who find themselves better suited for the O-Level track can make lateral transfers. Temasek Junior College will also extend its four-year IP to a six-year programme beginning in Secondary 1. The expansion of the IP landscape, which will take effect from 2012 onwards, will allow our top talent to be nurtured in a more diverse group of schools.
Victoria School and Cedar Girls’ Secondary School will partner Victoria Junior College, and Methodist Girls’ School will partner Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) to offer the IP. St. Joseph’s Institution will expand to offer a six-year programme leading to the International Baccalaureate.
IP students from Catholic High School, CHIJ St. Nicholas Girls’ School and Singapore Chinese Girls’ School will progress to a new Government junior college to be set up by 2017. Details on the new junior college will be provided later. -

You are completely misguided in this instance. A school should not be graded base on cop. Instead, the better perimeter should be performance base on their O- level results. By placing Yishun Town at tier 3 is already far more than generous as their academic performances were just too ordinary.
Next time do your homework deligently before arguing your case in this forum. -
Edureach:
Look at the 1st page. And throughout, the perimeters for determining which schools we want to look at were not quite determined. That's why I was asking HOW we should be determining whether the schools are 2nd Tier, or 3rd Tier, and if we should simply take their Banding instead as you and some other parents suggest. If not, how to classify the schools, right, teacher?phankao

Musings:
To my understanding, the 7 sec school that will only offer IP program to the top x% of students in their school and not to everyone. And with their top students not taking \"O\" levels. I believe their banding may drop too. So how to classify them?Do note that Cat High, St Nics and SCGS will soon be IP schools.

So confusing, how to choose a secondary, :scratchhead: based on COP, banding, or a combination of what ... -
Edureach:
But I thought YTSS's COP was 235 and it's an Autonomous school? Also understood the culture, teachers and curriculum very good. May be you have mistaken Yishun Sec for Yishun Town.phankao
Xinmin, yes but not Yishun Town which is probably tier 3 at best.
