I think I read somewhere that the current P will be posted to Bukit Panjang Govt High School. New P will be an old girl (previously 'O' lvl top scorer, I think).

My dd was feeling sad as she really liked the current P....

To be honest, I was quite surprised with the change in P, since there seems to be much gg on in St Nic next year: moving back to old premises, etc...

New Principal was a principal of Anderson Secondary School for 5 years and is now a Superintendent for the East Cluster. Hopefully she will be able to apply what she learnt from the various good schools(she is in-charge of currently) like Dunman High, Kong Hwa, Tao Nan etc to St Nicks and bring up the standard. I am hoping that this principal is approachable, humble and give feedbacks their due merits because the school has much to improve on.

In my opinion, St Nicks’ standard is going downhill for the Primary section because the current principal has been focusing on the academic of the secondary section - which is understandable viewing that they are going IP.

However, whether the standard in the Secondary school had improved because of the scholars or that the school has a vigorous programme is debatable.

As a parent of primary school students in St Nicks, I do not feel that St Nicks has value-add because in a way, the primary school is depending on its "brand name" to attract students. Based on my and my children’s observations, around 70%(possibly higher) of the children who are in the top class send their children to enrichment (which some teachers even encouraged if one wants the child to be amongst the top).

I also understand from parents whose children are performing poorly that teachers encourage parents whose children are not doing well to take on tuition although the school has remedial lessons. Apparently, the remedials are not effective and one can see that the poor performing students continue to perform poorly even after a year.

Also, given the long curriculum hours(one of the longest in Singapore for primary schools), students are not stretched and has to stay back for IT lessons which in some schools with better logistical management, are able to conduct during curriculum time.

When feedback was given, one HOD said that it was up to the teacher to stretch the students - but if there is better management, schools should have some separate materials to stretch the better ones and make it a school culture that all students should be stretched to their maximum potential.

One good point about the school is that the chinese standard is gradually improving since the last Principal - Helen Choo. But it can also be attributed to the HOD Chinese and HOD Special projects - especially the HOD Chinese whom I find is proactive and initiated.

when you say long school hours - do you mean start from P1, or only for those in P5 / P6, preparing hard for PSLE, need to ‘cheong’ ?

if start from P1, think is scary.
but if is P6, due to affliated Secondary school awaiting for SNGS girls, can relax …

what time do they reach home normally, if school in AM session ?
can return home latest by 5 pm, in time to makan dinner ?

Yes I think St Nic school hours are pretty long. My P3 dd in St Nic has longer school hours than my P5 dd in another school.

\"Regular\" school hours are 7.20am - 1.45pm on Mon, Wed and Fri. School ends at 1.15pm on Tues & Thurs. For CCA, dd stays back twice a week (until 4pm on Tues & 4.15pm on Fri). On top of that, like try said in his/her post, the girls stay back on ad-hoc basis for things like IT Training. My hubby jokes that at this rate, we won't be seeing our dd by the time she reaches P6 😂
