Sorry I am not sure but can actually work it out using hypothetical figures on a spread sheet by imputing estimated raw of pupils scores based on a certain sample size. You can calculate the average score and SD. For difficult papers the average may be in the range of 50 to 60 but simpler papers can estimate about 70 to 80.

My guess is that SD normally will be lower, in the range of 10, possibly for difficult papers and probably in the range of 15 to 22 for tougher ones. However, if you are able work out using excel and that will help to calculate the SD and T-scores.

Mind you, what you calculate is just as good as your guess…. Too many uncertainties to be sure.

            Hi turquoise,

If the paper is easy, the average score will be pushed up. If most pupils have scored around the average, the variance will be small and therefore the standard deviation will be low. With a low standard deviation, although the average mark is high, a pupil who is strong at the subject will have high T-score.

However if the paper is difficult, the average scores will be lower but there is likely to be greater spread of the marks around the average score. We are likely to get a greater standard deviation here. Here, a strong pupil will still have a high T-score as the higher standard deviation will be offset by the higher difference of his score as compared to the average score.

What I think the difference will be is that for every mark drop in the raw score will result in a bigger drop in the T-score when you have a simpler paper as compared to a more difficult paper.
            Thanks Dharma.

Is the moderation/scaling a fair thing? My child is a 50+ scorer....will he end up fail?

I really don't care about the t-score scaling, but how can 1 of the comprehension passages be similar to what MANY students all round Singapore have seen & done before? Except what they've done is on Mangoes & what came out in PSLE is apples. So what? Still unfair to those who've never seen that passage.

My child and all his friends have never seen that passage before! Ok, so it's just their bad luck that they are not in the school or tuition centre or whatever that so happened to have done that comprehension passage before, huh?

How can MOE just get a passage like that ? They buy from the same source and didn't check properly, is it?

              :x :x

How about compo? What was the theme of the picures about and what was the 命题作文 topic?

                Pictures:
                1. mom gives school girl $2 and lunch box
                2. (recess) school girl asks boy beside her why he not going to eat arh? boy looks sad.
                3. girl go to canteen with lunchbox and money. see rice stall then want to buy chicken rice
                4. girl eating chicken rice with lunchbox on table beside her
5.girl want to throw rice in lunchbox into dustbin, then think about the sad look on the boy's face
                6. question mark.

I think it was like that from my understanding of the pics.

                命题作文:
                我再也不敢没礼貌。

like that lor. I think so if rmb correctly. hee hee. but very hard write the 2nd question. my brain freeze so had to write pic

the paper was very easy(im a student). the compo was quite manageable but i think a lot students wrote the 命题 or at least in my class maybe its because my school is learning 弟子规. i think that the comprehension was ok, but compared to old psle papers(from the psle chinese book that they sell) it was quite hard.

the first compre was about a boy who stole an apple.

second compre was about newton. i personally hated this as i couldnt stand the fact how newton was soo hardworking and anti social in the story that he forgot about the vegetables he had to sell. (how did he survive in life without being practical?)

but nvm, i hoped this helped parents.

I am with you. Becos of this, my boy might end up with a t-score < 50 for CL paper 😢

Thanks, Dharma. Am I correct to assume that generally, if a paper is easy, there will be a low t-score and that is not in the favour of those good in the subject.

Conversely, if the paper is very difficult with the general population performing poorly, then the ones who score very well will have a high T score?

                      Thanks.
Could someone please help understand how the grade A*, A, B ...etc are determined for a simpler or a hard paper? Thanks!

Fully agree. And this will pull down the overall aggregate - which is the only thing that matters in the general S1 posting exercise. 😞
