Even if it's further, 孟母三迁。As long as its better for them. Sometimes discussing and considering which school for our dearies to go to with other parents is an enjoyable process, it doesn't mean that we are worrying too much.

I am new here. My dd will be joining the 2012 enrollment.
A bit headache. Dunno which school to choose.
Anyone can advise?

This is what I am dilemma of:
I am staying in Jurong West. Nearest two Pri Sch is within 5min walk.
Jurong West Pri - Standard drop, advantage is near my house.
Frontier Pri - New Sch, 2nd batch to join this sch.
Chances for these two sch are 50-50, as 2C (within 1km will require ballot)

I am the old gal of Nan Hua Pri. I can actually join in Phase 2A2 and do not need to worry abt ballot. But transportation and stress are what I am worry about.

Sch bus arrive 6am when sch start at 7:15am. Another way is to send by car/mrt, which need to leave house at 6:30am.

I am worry that she cannot handle the stress level in the SAP sch. Although CC teachers did feedback that she is above average in academic.

What will you do if you were me?

I will choose Nan Hua as my child will be assured of a place. No headache. My niece can’t even get into Jurong west primary school under phase 2C within 1 km, 5 mins walk. I will be proud if my child is able to enter SAP school. I believe your daughter can make it. If I were you, I will sacrifice a little for my child. Go for Nan Hua.

go for Nan Hua (NH), since it's your alma mater and Nan Hua is a great school proven with a strong, thick history through generation.


current NH Principal comes from ex Tao Nan. She had years of experience teaching in Tao Nan. In the past, she had groomed many pupils in Tao Nan very well. The pupils she had taught before remembered her fondly. Some even came back to visit her in NH now (in university), greet her and thanked her in person for her teaching, that had helped groomed them to what they become today. Yes! Tao Nan pupils remember her dearly, they are grateful and thankful to her. She may be a bit strict, but she's one dedicated good Principal. Together with strong teaching team supportive staff at NH, your child is definitely in good steady hands.

Nan Hua being SAP focus a lot on values, teaching good manners, teaching morals, etc. - it is a good, conducive environment for a child to grow up in, to build her character.

it brings forth teaching of important, strong good character moral values education like heavy emphasis on:-

resolve the distance issue through some other ways. if can't shift house all the way closest to NH (in case houses too expensive), shift to half way mark to NH also good, to cut down & reduce travelling time and distance. To know where is the best optimal location to shift to in terms of reducing time and distance, consult NH school bus operator - for their daily school bus travel planning route, where school bus travel through various district / areas to pick up children. from there, you'll obtain answer.

give your child a chance. Do not give up on her yet. It's too soon & too early to tell a child's academic performance at K2. Too young! If you don't try, you never know may regret for life. if a child can't cope with HCL at end of P4, at the very most switch her over to ordinary Chinese in P5 / P6. But before that from p1-p3, give your daughter a chance to study in a SAP school. She is only P1. A lot of pupils enter P1 blur blur, it's common that kids stil don't know how to read English nor Chinese well, at point of entry in P1. But subsequently they can catch up, can handle HCL. Anyway P1 teachers start from scratch, children all start from common footing. For all you know, she catch up fast, prove you wrong, can cope well, give you surprises.

still got one more year to go, before start P1 2013 Term 1. Still have time. can catch up a lot in one year's time. perhaps you may help her improve Chinese gain confidence by sending her to any one of the following:-

- Kumon Chinese (this is good. provides very systematic, step by step structured curriculum to teach Chinese)
- Yuquan (very good )
- Jiang lao shi
- Berries
- any other Chinese learning centre, nearer your house
- buy 四五快读 series and actively assist your child:-

this year Nan Hua churn in impressive results at psle. :rahrah:
almost 40% NH pupils scored 250 and above. Pupils can enter IP track Secondary schools readily. 40% is a large number !

Any advise on chances of getting admission ? If not likely, which schools should they consider ?

However, she can’t qualify to her dream school, MGS. The cut off of the school without affiliation is 253. She was very disappointed. Now she has to apply for other alternatives. If she was from MGS primary, she would be guaranteed a place. More and more good secondary schools are going IP, MGS, SCGS, Cedar girls etc. This would mean cut-off points to get to these secondary schools will be higher. Affiliation seems to be the only way to obtain a place in such schools if your child’s score is between 235 to 250. To me such score is good but they may not be good enough to qualify for such good secondary school.

there is no affiliation benefits for entry into IP stream for affilate schs. but for schs like ACSI where i read that they give priority to own O-level stream students for transfer to their IP-IB stream (correct me if i am wrong), the benefits starts when the boys go into ACSpri. MHO.

ACI allows affiliation. MGS is similar to ACI. MGS is providing mid-stream IP program.

if child can enter an affliated primary school, safer to enter first in P1.

6 years later if psle score is better, can always go another school … at least got choice mah.

1 mark difference … counts a lot. don’t underestimate the power of this significant 1 mark, to meet COP. 1 mark difference can determine if a child can enter his dream Sec school smoothly or … still need to appeal, thus subject to a lot of uncertainty & stress.

in the event child can’t enter his dream school because miss the COP by 1 mark - can still fall back on the affliated Sec school as backup. Blessed are those parents with kids able to enter affliated primary schools.

example:
if boy from Maris Stella primary miss HCI COP by 1 mark (this year cut off at 259), he can appeal. if appeal fail, can fall back on MS affliated Sec. ie. he has to put HCI as 1st choice (dream school), and put MS Sec as 2nd choice (but 2nd choice must be a confident school to get in, in the event 1st choice fail).

example:
if he score 255 + (3) ==> 258, he can appeal to HCI (COP at 259). in the event appeal fail, can still fall back on MS Sec at 258.
