Littlekohs:
Littlekohs,
Thanks phtthp!
So you are suggesting that you would choose ACS junior or ACS primary over Peihwa? Can I know why is it so? Peihwa is a sap school with 16 going into GEP this year, still without GEP they produced 2 top scorers in PSLE. Are you choosing for the cca?
We choose Pei Hwa due to the Chinese cultures that we want our DS to be in. I am trying my best to communicate to DS in Mandarin now as I don't want him to fail Chinese and be a \"Kantan\". Always tell him he's a Chinese, and thus he MUST achieve a certain standard for this subject. Also, most kids nowadays are only good in English, unlike our era whereby we can speak English, Mandarin, dialets, etc.
Why don't you have a scoring system for the 3 schools and see which suits your criteria most? Once you have decided, just go for it. Do the best for your child's 6 yrs of primary school education and leave the rest to God. -
Littlekohs:
Do you know is peihwa affiliated to any secondary schools?
To us, affiliation is not important as we prefer DS to fight base on his own merit. If you have done some work, you would have realised that most schools are increasing the COP for the affiliated primary schools to get into the sec. SJI COP was merely a 3-pts difference. With more and more schools going IP, the difference will be minimal in future as all would want to attact good students. -
Yes, indeed this is true.
more and more affliated Sec schools are now raising the bar for COP (cut off point) slowly, in order to attract and retain back high scorer, affliated primary school pupils to get in, instead of losing their own home grown pupils each year batch, as they tend to head for hot, popular top Tier 1 Sec IP schools. The top 6 Sec IP schools normally refer to - RI, RGS, HCI, NYGH, NJC and catching up fast hot on the heel is NUS High (a unique, highly specialized Sec school leading to a Diploma, instead of an 'A' level certificate). Thus, the gap difference between their own affliated students vs. external students from other outside schools - is gradually closing up, getting narrower and narrower, as time pass.
some affliated Sec schools in fact look forward to welcome this move. Some Sec schools intend to raise each year COP, up by 5 points. The feedback was that some primary affliated pupils tend to take for granted that they can just walk across easily conveniently to the Sec school next door, after P6. Now the Sec schools want to make the students work hard for it, earn their keep, to deserve a slot there. For an IP Sec school, the average minimum COP expected is around > 250. -
phtthp:
fyi - Barker is a GEP centre, not Junior. Later on in P3, if your son happen to be offered a GEP place, and if he is already in Barker, then there is no hassle of shifting around. If your son is in Junior, he'll be on wait list to transfer over to Barker GEP, if he's been offered.
Not true lah. If ACSJ boys are offered GEP, they will automatically be offered a place in ACSP. They will not be in wait list. The GEP class is another class apart from the mainstream. -
Scary:
Well said! :goodpost: Personally i think parents worried too much. Getting into school that are nearby to the child's home is more important. If the school starts at 7.30am and can you imagine a child waking up at 5.45am just to catch the school bus! This is all so ridiculous. A child needs more sleep and rest. Even an adult has difficulty waking up at this time, what's more it is worse for a child.Littlekohs:

Even if it's further, 孟母三迁。As long as its better for them. Sometimes discussing and considering which school for our dearies to go to with other parents is an enjoyable process, it doesn't mean that we are worrying too much.Scary:

not familiar with Anderson nor Hougang, can’t comment. Any parent with children studying in either school ?
-
Hi,
I am new here. My dd will be joining the 2012 enrollment.
A bit headache. Dunno which school to choose.
Anyone can advise?
This is what I am dilemma of:
I am staying in Jurong West. Nearest two Pri Sch is within 5min walk.
Jurong West Pri - Standard drop, advantage is near my house.
Frontier Pri - New Sch, 2nd batch to join this sch.
Chances for these two sch are 50-50, as 2C (within 1km will require ballot)
I am the old gal of Nan Hua Pri. I can actually join in Phase 2A2 and do not need to worry abt ballot. But transportation and stress are what I am worry about.
Sch bus arrive 6am when sch start at 7:15am. Another way is to send by car/mrt, which need to leave house at 6:30am.
I am worry that she cannot handle the stress level in the SAP sch. Although CC teachers did feedback that she is above average in academic.
What will you do if you were me? -
I will choose Nan Hua as my child will be assured of a place. No headache. My niece can’t even get into Jurong west primary school under phase 2C within 1 km, 5 mins walk. I will be proud if my child is able to enter SAP school. I believe your daughter can make it. If I were you, I will sacrifice a little for my child. Go for Nan Hua.

go for Nan Hua (NH), since it's your alma mater and Nan Hua is a great school proven with a strong, thick history through generation.
current NH Principal comes from ex Tao Nan. She had years of experience teaching in Tao Nan. In the past, she had groomed many pupils in Tao Nan very well. The pupils she had taught before remembered her fondly. Some even came back to visit her in NH now (in university), greet her and thanked her in person for her teaching, that had helped groomed them to what they become today. Yes! Tao Nan pupils remember her dearly, they are grateful and thankful to her. She may be a bit strict, but she's one dedicated good Principal. Together with strong teaching team supportive staff at NH, your child is definitely in good steady hands.
Nan Hua being SAP focus a lot on values, teaching good manners, teaching morals, etc. - it is a good, conducive environment for a child to grow up in, to build her character.
coming from a SAP school -
it brings forth teaching of important, strong good character moral values education like heavy emphasis on:-
\"Courtesy, Righteousness, Integrity, Sense of Shame, Loyalty, Filial Piety, Humanity and Love\".
(pinyin: li, yi, lian, chi, zhong, xiào, rén, aì). Indeed, your child is blessed & fortunate to be given this great golden opportunity to grow up her 6 key important character building foundation years in a conducive environment exposed to strong Chinese roots, rich values system & culture.
resolve the distance issue through some other ways. if can't shift house all the way closest to NH (in case houses too expensive), shift to half way mark to NH also good, to cut down & reduce travelling time and distance. To know where is the best optimal location to shift to in terms of reducing time and distance, consult NH school bus operator - for their daily school bus travel planning route, where school bus travel through various district / areas to pick up children. from there, you'll obtain answer.
give your child a chance. Do not give up on her yet. It's too soon & too early to tell a child's academic performance at K2. Too young! If you don't try, you never know may regret for life. if a child can't cope with HCL at end of P4, at the very most switch her over to ordinary Chinese in P5 / P6. But before that from p1-p3, give your daughter a chance to study in a SAP school. She is only P1. A lot of pupils enter P1 blur blur, it's common that kids stil don't know how to read English nor Chinese well, at point of entry in P1. But subsequently they can catch up, can handle HCL. Anyway P1 teachers start from scratch, children all start from common footing. For all you know, she catch up fast, prove you wrong, can cope well, give you surprises.
still got one more year to go, before start P1 2013 Term 1. Still have time. can catch up a lot in one year's time. perhaps you may help her improve Chinese gain confidence by sending her to any one of the following:-
- Kumon Chinese (this is good. provides very systematic, step by step structured curriculum to teach Chinese)
- Yuquan (very good )
- Jiang lao shi
- Berries
- any other Chinese learning centre, nearer your house
- buy 四五快读 series and actively assist your child:-

besides, CC teachers feedback that she is above average in academic. so have faith in your daughter. she'll make it. Go for Nan Hua !
this year Nan Hua churn in impressive results at psle. :rahrah:
almost 40% NH pupils scored 250 and above. Pupils can enter IP track Secondary schools readily. 40% is a large number !

88.3 % of Nan Hua primary school students able to enter Sec 1 EXPRESS stream. That speask very well of the school !
