DS1 used to suffer from sniffers in the morning and at night. He ate loads of TCM medication that helped to alleviate a bit, but the problem never really went away.

At someone's recommendation, we used pure sesame oil (NOT the type that's mixed with veg oil). Dip cotton bud into the sesame oil, and dab gently inside the nostrils.

after a couple of weeks, the sinus mysteriously went away. We stopped for a while. There are times when the sniffers come back, we just do the sesame trick a bit and it'll go away again.

Googled and saw some TCM remedy that's available from our kitchens.

      Hi, hquek

May I know where did you buy the pure sesame oil? Thanks!

I got mine in Penang (was there when a local guide recommended to us) - Gnee Hong. I saw it selling in Giant/supermarkets in JB also.

But I think the ones in Singapore would do (can't think why not) - there's the ubiquitous 'Zhi Cheng' ma you...can buy from ntuc.

There are 2 types of sesame - pure and mixed with veg oil. Just have to look out on the label.

Oh...I thought those that are sold in the Supermarket are those mix with veg oil for cooking, didn't know they sell the 'pure' types as well. Okie, will look out for the label. :thankyou:

Both Guardian and Watsons seem to have stopped selling Karvol. Any idea why?

Hi Jennifer, went to a TCM named YuHong Chinese Medicine on Sat. Is this the one you mentioned?

Was skeptical because it seems like a one man operation and he prescribed base on what I told him, did not look at ds's nose or 'bah mai' ๐Ÿ˜

Yes, he's the one we r seeing. He used to hv a lady assistant, guess few patients so no need for oth staff.

I am surprised he did not check the pulse for a new case. Once he did not do so for my P3 boy n I requested him to do so. Do let us know whether your boy's condition improves.

            Hi Jennifer,
YuHong has closed and we understood from the shop's new owner that the doctor has returned to China for good! Do you know if this is true?

We stop visiting for a while when ds came down with fever and we had to take him to a western doctor. When we went back 4-6 weeks later, we find him gone. ๐Ÿ˜ข

At first, I didn't quite find his treatment effective as ds's nose were still block all the time and it was really expensive when we calculated that 8 visits have already cost us $450+.

However, after we tried Yu Guo and again western medicine, we find ds's condition was so much better then. Now, his discharge is not only bad but often bloody, sigh...

Thinking back, the YuHong doctor always emphasized that what we need to work on is to build up ds's internal organ (can't rmb if it is 'shen' or 'gan') which is the root to ds's problem. Other TCM doctor we went to only prescribe medicine to treat the symptom.

Guess we now have to look at surgery as a solution again. ๐Ÿ˜ž

My kids sometimes get blocked nose for no apparent rhyme/reason - usually before sleeping/just waking up. Just got this recently - NatraBio, Cold & Sinus Nasal Spray. Supposed to be non-addictive and can be used for long term.

Anyway, i tried it myself and it was pleasant and the blocked sensation goes away almost immediately. We are not using it regularly, only on a as needed basis.

From iherb, itโ€™s US$7.10. If you buy with other things that are light, shipping can be as low as US$4. But Iโ€™m sure local stores may carry becos Iโ€™ve found products from this brand here.

Which nasal spray is this? What brand did you use? I tried it once but it did not work for my son. He has been having blocked nose on and off for ever since he started Pri school.

                  hi jlimk,

The brand is called Natrabio. http://www.iherb.com/NatraBio-Cold-Sinus-Nasal-Spray-0-8-fl-oz-24-ml/6644?at=0

I just tried and was happy it works. Used to use the one given by KK, but that one cannot exceed 5 days usage, so I didn't quite like it.

                    Hi hquek,

Thank you, I have not heard of this brand. I may try it out as I am at my wits end, donโ€™t know how to help my son with his blocked nose.

When my kids exhibit runny nose, I use Natrabio's cold and flu relief, it's to drip under the tongue. fairly effective in initial stages. I definitely have seen this in local organic items store. Always sold out in local stores and sometimes in iherb. (http://www.iherb.com/NatraBio-Children-s-Cold-and-Flu-Relief-Liquid-1-fl-oz-30-ml/6638?at=0). This established my trust in their products.

For DS1, his blocked nose was quite bad. we spent a lot of time and money on TCM but it didn't quite help. Finally we just gave up and let it be. The sesame oil helped but he hated it absolutely. Nowadays he's fine, but sometimes relapses. DS2 is the one nagging about blocked nose these days - but his doesn't seem as bad as DS1's symptoms then. I do get blocked nose sometimes and find this pretty effective.
