Do companies really do that? They would have to pay your previous employer your three months salary right?

      cherrygal:
I was in a job that required 3 months' notice too. The only way is to get another company to buy you out. That could mean zero notice too! That's what I did but it burnt bridges lah... hahaha

Some companies give their prospective employee a 'sign-on' bonus, meaning they give the employee an amount equivalent to what the employee is supposed to pay to the current employer for not serving notice. This way the new employer is not 'involved' in the process of 'buying out' the employee from the current employer, although it basically serves the same purpose lar...

Yup, my fren’s employer gave the sign-on bonus and she settled her own termination fee. My employer decided to write a cheque directly to my old employer but that meant my old employer knew where I was going lah…

So far I only heard of MNCs doing this - buying over the employee - to prevent a long wait. Most local companies will tell you to offset your annual leave or just wait for you to complete your notice period.

This tool not accurate lah... coz the median will get pulled down by the really low income earners. It's not comparing with people who have the same educational level. I checked for females and the median is quite low. Getting above 50% is not satisfactory at all. For females earning above $10K, they belong to top 6% of the female population here.

depending on age... for those above 40 i guess $20k is the benchmark for top 10% high flyer...

I informally told my boss that I would like to apply for the 8am to 5.30pm working hour arrangement in 2012, when my girl goes on to morning session and she needs to sleep by 8+pm.

He told me a lot of caveats like \"at 5.30pm everyone else will be still around but you are leaving, the top boss might not like it etc etc etc....\" So indirectly he's saying that if he says yes to me, it might be difficult for him to be accountable to his boss *blah blah blah*

Initially I still think of suggesting that I take a 30 min lunch break (instead of the 1-hour) so that I can go back earlier as well. But I think no use suggesting it at all 🙂

              *Sigh*

Is it so difficult for companies to embrace work from home or part-time work arrangement? Sometimes I wonder if companies here have more \"trust\" in their employees, in this age of technology, a lot of work can be accomplished via working from home. But everyone still have this facetime mentality....Nobody says anything when people come in late, go for 2-hour lunch breaks, coffee/tea breaks, but if people leave punctually stares will be exchanged. KPIs etc seem to have taken a very back-seat...

              Very sad culture isn't it??

Agree totally. I left my job to be SAHM partly becoz company cannot allow flexible hours and work from home option. I was also penalized for my maternity leave at the appraisal. My boss actually dared to say he has to discount my bonus as I was only in the office for 8 out of 12 months (16wks maternity leave). I worked my ass off while I was pregnant and completed all my KPIs!

Not just that, if I talk to my colleague for more than 5mins, my boss don’t like it either. He wants us to talk less and work more.

So true! Its really sad that employeers don't trust employees here and if you want to be a career woman Plus a good mother, they ask you to choose. Why can't we have both?

                      I like my job cos:

                      1) it pays me decently
                      2) work hours are flexible
                      3) environment is pleasant, boss is switch off kind busy playing office politics so we can run operations our own way - smoothly
                      4) colleagues and clients are generally friendly

                      I don’t like it cos:

                      1) decent pay can always be better
                      2) work hours flexible means some seasons have to work real hard - e.g. 12- 16 hr days for some months, 24 hr stretch on really bad days
                      3) boss is switch off and backstabbing person that plays favourites and not very competent
                      4) some politicking but I guess that’s normal

                      All in all, content.

Please let me know what you think of my job/boss.

I like this present job because I don’t have to work overtime. I could leave on the dot and allows me to pick my boy from cc. However what is killing me is my boss and my relationship with him.

                        - My boss walk in to the office everyday with a stern face (bao gong face). He doesn’t smile. Of my 1 year service in the company, i think I see him smile less than 5 times. No, not to me. Only to clients.
There is no eye contact with him even if you face him.
                        - His instructions is always very brief. When you ask him further, he will be irritated and fed up and may even raise his voice.
                        - He is always talking about at his level, at your level… He never want to know you as a person. You are merely a employee to him. I remember when my mil passed away, he did not ask me anything. In fact, he was angry that i was on leave for that couple of days…

I am really thinking hard whether i should quit my job. I am not sure whether i am being too sensitive or what - the recent payment of AWS, he gave me second lowest among all staff (I am the one that prepare payroll). I take this as a indication he is asking me to go.

                        Any advice?

                        Thanks!
