Nms1... Initially agreed no off until reduction complete.. I gave her a few loan repayment schedules n she chose to get 100 a month for the loan period.. But now.. These friends of hers are getting off one week into the job.. Kinda makes me feel bad, not to mention look bad.. 😞

You let her chose how much to collect from you each month? Isn't this fixed by the agent? If you're paying her more than the amount specified by the agency, aren't you taking a financial risk if the maid doesn't work out and you return her to the agent?

This was all agreed and discussed at the agents and included in her contract. She had come into Singapore herself on a tourist visa so it was a small amount that she had to repay.

POAteacher, she is a direct hire via agent so the loan is solely between us, agent not involved. If things don't work out, can't return her to agent.. That's the risk taken. When I hired her on the phone, we had agreed on the number of off days n I had told her then, that she could not start her off days until loan fully repaid. That was the practice 6 years ago when I hired my previous maid.

Hence when she told me abt her friends who are starting their off days so soon, I was rather surprised n wanted to find out if the norms have changed..

As far as I know, they don't get a day off until the loan is repaid. I was just at maid agency yesterday, & that was what the agent said.

A large number of Indo maids still have no off days as specified in their contract.

Carebear, agree but when off day becomes the law it won’t be easy for employers. Personally I have encounter this, I had to work on one Sunday and I asked my Mai to go off on weekdays or Sat. She refused because all her friends are off only on Sunday. Imagine this, if I had to work every Sunday I will have a very unhappy maid. She will leave for sure. Although my maid enjoys 2 off days, you can be sure it’s a Sunday. I pity my fellow Singaporean citizens who are affected.

Hi peapot, I agree with you that the maid might be unhappy if not given Sunday off.
If the time comes when it becomes compulsory for employers to give them off day, the the maid agencies should manage their expectation for off day, ie they should let them know if their prospective employer can give them off on Sunday or other days.

                    Hi everyone

I checked out Homemaker agency, but noticed that they are not so specialised in Myammar maids. After that, I discussed with my MIL who insisted having a Myammar maid.

Anyone of you ever have a maid from Myammar?

Any recommendation which agency is experienced in getting a maid from that country?

                    TIA>

When the proposed changes in law comes into effect, they will be entitled to 1 day off p week--- but not nec Sundays. But most employers will prob choose Sunday, cos they too are off from work, and can take that day for family outing day. I can't imagine how crowded our streets, malls, trains and buses will be on Sundays!!! Train sure break-down 😂
