Autolycus and Mandarin, many thanks for your sharing. Haha, my DS slacks while not focussing in his work and as a result cannot finish his work in an efficient manner. In pri sch days, it's so common to see him taking 2 or even up to 3 hours to finish a piece of work that should have taken not > 1 hour. Up until today, still have to nag him to finish homework without being distracted by TV/YouTube (yes given homework on 1st day), pack his bag without leaving pieces behind for someone else pick up after him, etc. :slapshead: Wanted very much to just leave it to see how he would handle.... looking forward to the training he will get at sch to develop him into one who can slack because he has focussed and finished his work efficiently not because he is not focussed and slacks and takes longer than necessary. I shall tell you an ACS(I) story for bedtime.


Once upon a time, there was a senior lab tech who constantly found ways to make work easier. He created many inventions which saved time and resources. One day, his boss found out, and told the tech to take photos and submit for WITS convention. He got awards for his labour-saving, time-and-resource-saving devices.

Then his boss's boss found out. This boss's boss was a typical SG boss. He said, \"How come the lab techs got time to read newspapers and even rest in the lab office?\"

The lab tech's boss tried to convince the super-boss that one should encourage innovation and reward it. After all, why should you make work easier if it means you end up doing more work? But sadly, the super-boss did not agree, and eventually he demoted the tech's boss for 'subversive thinking'.

Epilogue: The lab tech was promoted, the super-boss was sacked in the end. I hope some people lived happily ever after. The End.

Nice to hear a "happily ever after" story once in a while. More so in this country where tyranny of rank often suffocates brilliant young minds.

Sorry to interrupt the forum. I’d like to ask if my son still stands a chance of appeal into Year 5 in ACSI if his nett score for O level is 7, after (9 minus 2). He was from a uniformed group and took part in several Science competitions in his Sec 3 to early Sec 4 years.

There is a very small chance. Currently, the max capacity of Year 5 is 450 (in fact, should be 360) but they exceed it every year by a handful.

My son also has English homework on first day but due on Thursday. He has started his Soccer CCA today. He cant wait for other CCAs to start and is also looking forward to EP. He wants to take cooking class.

So does ACS(I) has in-house foreign language classes (leading to O levels and IB) if not taking under MOELC? I think NUSHigh has Japanese which students need to pay if they wish to take it within school grounds. Wondering if it's common for sec schs.

ACS(I), last I knew, offered German, French and Spanish in-house for IB Diploma (i.e. Years 5-6). Occasionally, it has other offerings (e.g. introductory courses at Years 1-2 as part of the enrichment programme, which at one time included basic Japanese, taught by a New Zealander!). Staff resources in non-international programmes (i.e. those mainly targeting the SG-Cambridge GCE O/A levels) tend to be scarce for such subjects.

(But i'm wondering why would any one take up a new Foreign language subj at Yr5/6... unless they are preparing to take it as a standard level IB subject as a beginner)

Not homework, suppose to be school work. Except DS hasn't gotten the book yet from bookshop during curriculum time. Hence bo-pian, school work become homework liao.
