RE chinese names.

my ds1 took a longer time to master writing his Chinese name than ds2 although ds2's name has slightly more strokes than ds1. because ds1's preschool did not teach Chinese strokes (bu shou) while ds2 did.
for ds1, i will print out his CL name using Winword; i type out his name, change the font colour to lighter colour (so he could just trace over) and then number the strokes for him to practice.
for ds2, once he mastered the chinese strokes (eg heng shu pia na dian), i break down his names into parts and then we practise one part a day. eg his surname has left and right, we prac the left side by me saying out the strokes before we go on to the right side. we also breakdown his chinese character into recognisable 'picture', eg his name has a 'xing'(heart) which looks like a smiley face with 2 eyes and a noise.
make it fun. they'll pick it up in no time.

very fast barely before week 4 was up soon after P1 kick off, my friend received a phone call from her son's P1 English teacher in ACS.

Teacher commented, \"your son cannot read. He can only recognize very basic simple sight words, but that's about it. He cannot read. Can you please do something quick about it ? \"

Hi all, am new. Have been thinking whether to send my piglet to Cat High where my husband was an old boy OR SJI Junior. We live in Serangoon which is nearer to Cat High and think that piggy would have a good bilingual education. However we've heard that SJI Jr provides all-rounded education in a nurturing environment. Quite worried coz piggy is very active. Don't know whether can cope in SAP school? Anyone would like to comment on the differences between the two schools and their programmes/ CCAs? Thanks a lot!

I dont know much abt SJI but Cat High is one of the best schools in that area so you shd count yourself lucky that your DH is the old boy - cfm can get in!... :rahrah:

my friend’s daughter is a Maths teacher in one of the Pasir Ris schools.
She said there are a number of children when enter P1 - don’t know how to count.
Once exceed 10 fingers, some start looking down at their toes, take off socks and continue to count, using toes. She said too slow, hindering their progress at P1.

Wow… All these talk about preparing the kid adequately for p1 quite stressful.

My son is in phonics class for more than half year. He knows the sounds but blending still needs prompting. I’m hoping he will pick up reading by end of this year. His chinese is still half past six… Any recommendations how to build up his Chinese at home?
I’m still undecided about which school now. Initially wanted to try st Hilda using church affiliation but we bought a place in hougang recently and tampines would be too far. Now in dilemma… Any hougang/sengkang parents here to give ideas?

I guess one of the best ways is still to keep reading to him.
Eg if he likes animals, try to borrow/buy books abt animals..funny stories always works! .. and preferably you can set aside a time to read to him everyday.
I am also using some chinese assessment books / flash cards / basic montessori 500 words for him at home.
I just started him on berries, hopefully he will be more int in mandarin.

yes, my girl's kindergarten started making them practise write own Chinese name last week.


never mind, go slow. One day, practise writing only 1 character.
eg: Today learn to write own Sir name character, tomorrow write middle character, 3rd day write last character.

some Chinese characters hard to write, esp. name that involve too many key strokes. never mind, take a few days let them practise until familiar. buy a 60 cents exercise book with big square boxes inside. You write first row, piggy copy on 2nd row, 3rd row.

besides own name, also teach piggy write the date.
eg: today is Jan 16. Teach piggie write \"yi yue shi liu ri\".

when go P1,
first thing to write on 1st page of Chinese exercises is:-
piggy's own Chinese name, plus the date.

also when Chinese Teacher call out piggy's name, piggy can respond.
