any parent with kids going, target Pasir Ris schools ?
please ensure that your child is … able to count, with remaining time left from now till end of K2.
sharing …
my friend’s daughter is a Maths teacher in one of the Pasir Ris schools.
She said there are a number of children when enter P1 - don’t know how to count.
Once exceed 10 fingers, some start looking down at their toes, take off socks and continue to count, using toes. She said too slow, hindering their progress at P1. -
Wow… All these talk about preparing the kid adequately for p1 quite stressful.
My son is in phonics class for more than half year. He knows the sounds but blending still needs prompting. I’m hoping he will pick up reading by end of this year. His chinese is still half past six… Any recommendations how to build up his Chinese at home?
I’m still undecided about which school now. Initially wanted to try st Hilda using church affiliation but we bought a place in hougang recently and tampines would be too far. Now in dilemma… Any hougang/sengkang parents here to give ideas? -

Hi merkon!
I guess one of the best ways is still to keep reading to him.
Eg if he likes animals, try to borrow/buy books abt animals..funny stories always works!
.. and preferably you can set aside a time to read to him everyday.
I am also using some chinese assessment books / flash cards / basic montessori 500 words for him at home.
I just started him on berries, hopefully he will be more int in mandarin. -

Eeks!! Okies!! Will start to be more 'hardworking' with my little piggy!!yes, my girl's kindergarten started making them practise write own Chinese name last week.
never mind, go slow. One day, practise writing only 1 character.
eg: Today learn to write own Sir name character, tomorrow write middle character, 3rd day write last character.
some Chinese characters hard to write, esp. name that involve too many key strokes. never mind, take a few days let them practise until familiar. buy a 60 cents exercise book with big square boxes inside. You write first row, piggy copy on 2nd row, 3rd row.
besides own name, also teach piggy write the date.
eg: today is Jan 16. Teach piggie write \"yi yue shi liu ri\".
when go P1,
first thing to write on 1st page of Chinese exercises is:-
piggy's own Chinese name, plus the date.
also when Chinese Teacher call out piggy's name, piggy can respond.
else blur blur ... dun know Teacher calling him. :boogie:
for spelling / tingxie, let's continue discussion:-

Realised before chancing upon this forum that I’ve been laid back - thought of letting my son play hard until end of K1. Sigh. He still can’t read or write beyond simple alphabet letters. Chinese much worse. Pressing the pacnic button and preapring to enrol him in EL reading program and Chinese enrichment.
How’s I can Read and Berries? Son went for trial at Berries Bishan branch last year and hated it. Have booked a trial at a different branch and praying he’ll take to the lesson. Guess cannot avoid all these esp if we’re putting him in CHS.Great fear he’ll be in the last class of cohort and he’ll feel so demoralised.
So far, I’ve not heard anything about SJI Jnr. Any comments? -

Hi Powerpuff!
My kids never attended icanread but heard many gd comments fr my frens' whose kids attended the programme.. esp good for preschoolers.
You can also explore others like icreative learners, montessori phonics, read-in-a-week phonics programme...
My DS only attended 2 lessons of berries and he likes it, prob due to the friendly teachers..
Why did your DS hate the lesson? becos of the teachers? Or he just doesnt like Chinese?
i guess its good to keep on trying different schs - am sure your DS will find sth he likes/is comfortable with.
You can also try tien hsia, han language, Hua, eduplus.. many others... -

Hi
Thanks for the useful information. Will call and arrange for a trial with them and try to psycho my son to attend them. He asked why he had to go for all those lessons so I said they were to help him prepare for Pri 1. He replied "Then I will go to K3" instead of Pri 1.
Life is so different now! We didn’t have any of such lessons and yet we turned out ok. I sympathise with the kids these days - what a hectic childhood many of them are experiencing, just to get into good schools and hopefully get good jobs later on. -
Hi All,
I am indeed shocked that this thread is up two years ahead of time but its timely too as I’ve begun researching into the primary school options for my daughter and am learning a lot from all your sharing! Thank you very much!
I stay in Pasir Ris but my two closest schools are Meridian and Park View which is within 1km but I am hoping for Pasir Ris Primary which is >2km from where I stay. Have applied to be a parent volunteer but then again…its always going to be balloting when the time comes and the chance of success will be very slim for those outside 2km.
You guys reckon that i should seriously consider moving into the 1km zone for better chance?
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks.
