I know people who teach at Learning Lab and Mindstretcher. They don't write their own materials. They're given materials to teach with. If 2 small organisations can achieve this, why can't MOE help its teachers similarly?

But since these centres r known to have entry exams and their material caters mainly to the higer scorer of the cohort so that they can be pushed further (at a cost). Do we really wanna dump this material to the rest of the cohort when they r not quite ready?

Funny that you read things I did not write. I did not say to use these centres' materials. I said that MOE should provide ample materials to its own teachers to teach with... suitable for whatever the level.

Mindstretcher has no entrance exam. Only its high achievers' program requires an entrance exam. If Mindstretcher can develop materials for 2 different types of students, why not MOE?

What I really really wanna know is if HSK REALLY said that the education system can’t deliver, and therefore parents/tutors/enrichment (i.e., broader society) needs to help.

The solution is easy… stop testing beyond what the system can comfortably teach. Let crazy parents hothouse their kids into Cambridge at age 15, but don’t let the whole system chase after the crazies. Test less, and we will expect less of the system. Expect less of our flesh and blood and we will expect less of the system.

Because parents are part of the educational system, and are being expected much more -
            The minister (Mr.Heng), however, acknowledged
that “we expect much more of the education
system than it can deliver”. It is thus
important for parents, teachers, and the
broader society to play a role in the education
            system, he stressed.

By broader society, does he mean the tuition industry needs to play a role. Tuition and enrichment fees are now a must because the education system can't deliver?

Did he really say this? Looking4tutor, can you include your reference for your quote from HSK. Where and when did he say this... and where is it reported?

It's in this morning's papers. He was speaking at an SMU event.

Alright then people... you heard it from the boss. He has sanctioned tuition/enrichment/homsechooling because his system can't deliver the results he expects from our kids.

I read the article in today's paper. Don't think that's what he was saying.

:rotflmao: no lah that's not what he implied, but o well since flooding can be ponding any interpretation also can lah.

He said \"don't just chase for paper\"; you have to chase the paper plus acquiring more employable skill-sets.

This is my coffee-shop chit-chat interpretation of the taiji educational system -

Yes, parents need to do more for their children, not just helping them chase the paper but to build their character too.

Yes, broader society should set up more tuition and enrichment centres. As they are profit-making, they should ensure that the children under them pass whatever tests and major exams and prepare them in advance for the class lessons.

As for teachers they will cover whatever printed on the text books. If they go the extra miles they will consolidated all the questions and asnwers from this forum (like what I did for my ds - cos no money for tutor), as they might not have time to write their teaching materials. They will also relentlessly ask parents to send their children to the broader society so as to catch up with the rest of the smaller society in the classroom.

This is the 18 movements of taiji educational system.

End of my nonsensical coffee shop talks.

Chenonceau , I second this :goodpost:
we need more informed parents to second this :hi5:

Just test what you teach. That is what we all want. If MOE/School do that (teach less AND test what you taught), I am sure the number of KSP members, the number of tuition/enrichment centres, the number of assessment books will drop dramaaaatically. Then the main focus will be chanelled thro' other extra curricular activities and life skills.
