Is it a requirement from school? Or you just want to get it for him so that he can do some of his work on the computer?
I ask because if it is a school requirement, than they should have tie up with some vendors for some special package.
If it is not, than it really depends on your budget. If he is not bringing to school, than I find many of the sub-$1000 notebooks nowadays does their job very well. Especially I believe he will only use likely for word processing and spreadsheet. Maybe some presentation slides. These software do not require high end laptops. -

I’m using a Fujitsu T731 Tablet PC since mid-Jan. so far so good.
only complaint is that the screen rotates too easily.
I’d say get a tablet PC so the kid can write his questions on it and send to his teacher. My students usually take pictures with their hp and either upload to facebook or mms to me. I thought it’ll be easier if they can just write on their tablets if they have one. -
for sec sch, any notebook ~1k is ok…( word, excel, play DVD movie)
don’t buy netbook. or tablet.
if need to bring to school…
better get a unit with longer battery life, light.
if he play games, then don’t buy ~1k unit… get those >1.5K. using better graphic card.
if only use it @ home…
can consider get a desktop, not all-in-one unit. Install it @study room, can control his usage…
most kids might close/lock their room door when they are using notebook/PC.
