It take at least 4 mths to promote to EM (it may 6-8 mths also), When u become EM, u need to serve 1 year to get the letter. U may be too late for this route.

I join the RC in 2010, it took me 6 mths to promote to EM. And yes, u need to be EM for at least 1 year to qualify for the letter.

I am wondering whether does anyone perform PV way before the child is due for registration (i.e. > 1.5 years before registration) and whether there are schools who do allow parents to do so.

Yes, some school intake PV very early. My wife already finish the PV hours required by the school which is 60hrs and my son is currently in K1 this year. I ask her why school always call you to help them out and how about other parents? She said the school also call up other parents which has been selected but most of them are not free to turn up and some even fly aeroplane to the teacher in-charge, maybe they think still long way to go so can slowly do. The best time is to clock hours are during school holiday. In less then 3months, 60hrs hours clock (sound like part-time job) :celebrate:

most schools clock 40 hrs on average. The more demanding schools require 60 hrs, some even 80 hrs. :nailbite:

don’t think MOE give schools the mandate to abolish PV.

more likely it is those very hot, popular individual school who prefer to abolish it.

example:
for 2007 kids - Rosyth receive > 300 applicants for PV.
but school doesn’t need so many hundreds of PV. perhaps need only a small handful to help out in school activities.

but to go through hundreds of applications pouring in, just to sieve out a few selected candidates needed - require lots of time, dedicated resources and staff in reading thru mountain high pile up of cv and keep asking, " is this the one we need ? do we need this applicant ? ". School decide they rather put this amount of precious time spent on some other activities instead. Thus Rosyth abolish PV, let the active grassroot community leaders route take over all hopeful phase 2B applicants. Our year 2007 kids is the last year Rosyth accept PV. From 2008 batch kids onwards, new applicants surge towards GRL path direction, as this is the only way out under 2B.

going forward, Yes forsee that - gradually, the more popular, very hot individual schools may abolish PV, let GRL take over. Is the decision of individual school whether they want to keep or abolish PV route.

That sounds really comforting. My worry is more of MOE takes a policy decision to abolish PV totally given all the hype and talks about the downsides of PVs… Sigh…

my niece P3 in Ngee Ann this year.
She said please ground your child well in Chinese - during kindergarten K1, K2 foundation years. She said Ngee Ann P1 now offer 3 types of Chinese:-

- Higher Chinese
- Core Chinese (ie. normal or ordinary Chinese)
- Bridging Chinese (for weaker students who seldom have chance practise Chinese speaking)

but this Bridging Chinese is \"unofficial\".
once enter P1 after one month or so, Chinese teacher would have assessed your child. Teacher will classify your child under one of the above 3 category. Niece said other primary schools usually introduce Bridging Chinese at higher level. But Ngee Ann does it very early.

Bukit Panjang PS also offer the same from P1 Term 3 onwards...
So those P1 children are streaming now for Chinese as Term 3 those selected will be in these 3 types of chinese class.

I cannot imagine PV to be abolished and the impact will be a great influx of GRL. Then GRC like bukit timah, Moulmein will have oversupply of GRL.

This is a chicken and egg problem which cannot be easy resolved.
