Shop A has 25 sweets and shop B has 33 sweets. How many more sweets must John buy from shop B so that shop A will have 10 more sweets than shop B?

working 1.
25-10 = 15
33-15 = 18
Ans = 18

OR

working 2.
33-25=8
10+8=18
Ans = 18

Both ways are fine, just different explanations needed.

Working 1 can be explained as follows :
For shop A to have 10 more sweets than shop B, it means shop B can only have 25-10=15. Since shop B has 33 sweets now, John will have to buy 33-15 = 18 sweets from shop B.

As long asthe school can accept both workings I’m fine with it. I’m just afraid they will be very rigid in their workings.

last week test got over, my daughter has done silly mistake i.e wrong in copying the nos from the questions, after many practice she became confident of the fundamentals but these silly mistakes how to overcome dont know

don't be disheartened by this incident.. this is quite common among kids when they rush to complete their exams.

one good way to avoid this is to underline the key points (numbers to be used to solve question) in the question..thats what I am teaching my DD..

then before she write the equation, I will make her re-state the problem ..for eg:

There are 20 boys in a class. There are 20 more girls than boys in the class. Find the total number of students in the class.

Ans

(you can draw simple model here)
number of boys = 20
number of girls = 20 + boys = 20+20 = 40

Total students = boys + girls = 20+40 = 60

then check before moving to next question..

sounds simple..but need practice for kids to learn to be careful..

don't worry..slowly the silly mistakes will become less.. All the best to you DD for her future exam

Generally, there are two types of models.

Part-Whole Model
Comparison Model

There is no fixed way to present the MD; you may arrange the boxes horizontally or in stack them up vertically and you may cut the boxes horizontally as well as vertically.

As your child is still in P2, it’s worthwhile to invest in a book on MD. They are available in Popular.
