HVR, small investors not worth it for Foreign Currency Fixed Deposits

      1) your exchange rate is most of the time charged at board rate which is between 70 to 130 basis points on average EXTRA. Note that this goes both ways Buy and Sell

      2) normally bank will charge penalty for pre-termination before maturity

      3) risk of foreign exchange fluctuation

I’m not saying it’s a bad instrument or alternative but that you need to be aware. Having said, typically buying AUD below 1.28 wouuld be pretty safe and keep long term sell above 1.32/33… Pretty range bound. But in times of severe market distress, can fall very fast.

If for long term I rather buy shares eg SIA, decent dividend, low share charges lol… And potential 30% upside.

Hong Leong Asia, a company also under the control of Kwek's family.
Íts main interests are: consumer products, diesel engines and industrial packaging. Its a proxy to China's growth story with no S-chip financial accuracies concern.

Fundamentals: Its a growth co with its turnover doubled over the last 4 yrs from S$2.48B yr 2006 to S$5.1B YR 2010. Nett profit grew from S$61.1M to S$120M respectively. For FY2011, my estimate is nett profit of around S$95-97M. Current trading price is S$1.88. Total dividends S$0.10/shr, which gives you a yield of more than 5%. In yr 2008 which was their worst performing in recent yrs, the dividend was cut to S$0.05/shr which still gave a yield exceeding 2.5% Its nett asset backing is S$2.10 approx. Even at the nxt resistance of S$2.06, its PE is only 7.8x which is rather resonable for a mid size blue chip.

Technicals: The price has on recent days broke out of its base formation and is poised to test the overhead resistance of S$2.06 over the coming weeks bearing any negative market sentiment overseas.

The above is only an example of another alternative within the HL group. Its is not my aim to encourage you to buy the co's share. Just want to state that excess money into FD to obtain higher interest rate is not a winner's technique.

                1) it was just an illustration.
                2) the bad results were already expected. I own shares just around 10 and expect them to turn around as they usually do as they have a rather cyclical business. Lass time they booked costs due to higher fuel
Costs they ran up to 17-18 dollars. I’m a long term investor.
                3) I also feel that brokers and remisers like high velocity shares if not they will not be able to earn money.

Juz to share my own investment experience. I park a portion of my money in bond funds. It’s an alternative to FD with better returns but I suppose risk wise can be managed so long as one do not put all eggs in one basket

You looking for SGD FD only?

Actually I am thinking of AUD FD. The interest very high, but FX risk is there…
