I find my kid do improve after a few months but am concerned whether he will get confused when going to primary school due to the different method of teaching. I was told that we can only see significant improvement at Grade 9. Can parents with kids in CMA feedback? Thanks

My daughter is in the program for 1 yr plus and similarly, I don’t see much improvement now. She doesn’t apply the concept at all when doing maths questions… and she doesn’t enjoy the lessons as much as before.

In my opinion, CMA is good in helping young children grasp the number concept and do simple calculation in the beginning but it gets frustrating when the many formulas come into the picture… even we adults get confused.
Her teacher at JEI has recommended that we stop her CMA to avoid confusing her. But I find it a pity to stop halfway… anyone in the same situation?

What grade is yr child currently at? My son is currently at grade 11, where he learn the brother and best friend method. In fact, i just spoke to the principal last week and told him my intention to withdraw my son from CMA as he is confused on these two methods. The principal told me at this grade its very common for the child to feel confused, what we should do is to encourage and help the child to get through this level. Once he passes through this level, we will be able to see results.

I am not sure which grade she is in.. she is doing the pink book. The formulas that she is memorising is like -8=-10+5-3, etc (hope I remember correctly?).. she gets confused which formula to use when doing the sums. Her teacher at the centre said the same thing.. it is common to get confused and after she finished the pink book, we will be able to see results.

Maybe we should wait until she finish the pink book before we decide.. but then I am worried whether it will affect her maths...

The biggest problem I have, however, is getting her to finish her CMA homework every week.. that is the biggest headache :slapshead:

My son is using the pink book also, he is using a blue and a green book too. Let's keep our fingers cross then.

when kids are older especially sec one and above, they returned back the method and whatever formulas to their CMA teachers. Why waste money for short term? Must as well go for Maths programme whereby the kids are able to visualise and think logically for the rest of their life.

I am seeing my son getting confused with the formulas now and I am pondering if I should still continue. The school said this is normal and once the children are used to all the formulas, they will be able to calculate very fast. I am not sure how long it will take to achieve this standard but guess it also depends on each child.


Recently, his teacher even pulled his ears when he answered 2 questions wrongly. He dared not tell me and it was by chance that I spotted his ear was red. At first, I thought he accidentally scratched it while he was sleeping. When I asked him why he made that 2 mistakes, he answered the class was noisy as the teacher kept talking to another boy so he did not think properly. I feedback to the sch the following week but from then on, DS did not make any careless mistake anymore. Nevertheless, I do not favor such punishment on young kids.

I felt that my child has benefitted in terms of right, left brain development after being with CMA. She’s currently doing grade 5/6. Can’t comment much on whether its useful for Maths in school as she’s not in primary 1 yet. Hope this helps.

How long has your kid been with CMA to reach grade 5/6 and many long does she practice everyday? Am wondering at which grade to stop. Thanks
