jedamum's How to check my chances of getting a school?
-
Thanks, Jedamum, for this guide.
I'm already planning DD's pri 1 registration. She is 3 turning 4 this yr. I can register her at MGS under phase 2B, but heard that this school is super hard to get in. Even phase 2B got to ballot. And we are not staying within 1km, so chances even lower.
Even if we were to sell our current place and buy an aptment near that school, also no guarantee of entry. May still have to ballot, so is it worth all that trouble and risk of not getting in?
A friend advised me to try Paya Lebar MGS, say it's easier to get in than the elite MGS. But I heard that this school has some discipline problems, not sure if it's true?
any advice and input is much appreciated, cos this whole issue has caused me and DH some stress, so much so that he even dreamt about him balloting in a school! -

By Phase 2B, i believe that you are going thru the Christian/Catholics route. If so, are you open to enrolling your child in other popular schools that are not mission-based? If yes, you can look at Pv-ing at schools that gives you a higher chance of success, and at the same time monitor the statistics for MGS for the next few years; it seems like in 2010 there is balloting for <1km while earlier years' balloting is for those more than 2km.
High risk = High returns; are you willing to go for this high risk but if you can succeed, you'll get into your 'dream' school? If yes, do have a back up plan for a second choice school in Phase 2C that gives you a good chance to get into too. If not, use your Phase 2B (i assume is Religion-route) advantage at a safer school option or try pv at your other 'dream' school.
Regarding PLMGS, i am not sure if they have any disciplinary issues; but don't all schools have some kids that need discipline ? On the pros, PLMGS offers an all-girls education environment, you get priviledge via Phase 2B and also it has affiliation benefits to a secondary school. all these pros are concrete; disciplinary issues are hear-say (unless you have evidence). Do check out the stats; i think there is balloting for those staying more than 2km for phase 2B).
Good luck. -
Jedamum, thks for your reply. I prefer my child to study at a mission-based school so it's either MGS or PLMGS cos I have phase 2B advantage. But I will definitely think abt your suggestion abt PV.
Thanks again! -
2011 balloting statistics, Paya Lebar Methodist
=========================================
2B: >2 km - all got in, no need ballot.
2C:
<1 km, all got in - no need ballot.
within 1 to 2 km, 7 unlucky ones balloted out.
> 2km - no chance to ballot.
but for 2010, 2009:
2B: >2 km - balloting.
There was no balloting in Phase 2B last year (2011) but in the years before, balloting was conducted for applicants staying outside 2km.

Hi!
My dd was born in 2008. May I know how to plan 2nd choice school? Choose a less popular school or further distance from address? Hoping to get in to SCGS. Schools around that area eg. RGS, nanyang…are popular too. How to have backup plan? Tks! -
