2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

struggling:
Don't worry. I got only 61 marks in my Math CA1 last year. I did okay for my PSLE.Can anyone with experience guide me how I should prepare my son for PSLE this year (2012)? Its just past the CA1 and March is upon us. He only scored between 60-75 for his various subjects and that is causing me to panic!!!
Help please anyone! Am I supposed to make him study very subject every day with no break and cut all CCA? What's the best strategy for learning? He doesn't go for tuition except for Chinese, which I can't speak . We don't have enough money for tuition, so got to help him by myself. I am working part time so can only be with him sometimes.

Hi elisammom,elisammom:
Hi beanbear, curious... What strategies you used for Math n sci that your ds has improved so much?
Congrat! Great effort u n ds have put in!
For Math, it was really sheer hard work since last Dec holidays. Because he failed so badly, I really had to spend time analysing the gaps. .......
................ I also firmly believed that I was teaching DS study skills that will help him beyond the PSLE years. It was really a long-term investment.
What a wonderful mum you are. :rahrah:
Your DS is so fortunate to have you alongside him. Yes, I totally agree with you that it is a long term investment. Through your efforts, you have given your DS gifts of motivation, perserverance and the ability to critically anlayse -- these he now owns, and no one can take them away from him.
Your insights into his weaknesses and strengths will surely help him - this is the kind of help the system often cannot give , with its big class size and over loaded teachers.
Great Job Beanbear - press on, there is light at the end of the tunnel and the pot of gold at the end of that rainbow surely awaits both Mummy and son. :hugs: -
Anyone to share how I can guide my DD to improve on her English & Chinese Comprehension? She always failed this section and her marks were pulled down by this section. She is also weak in Sci Paper 2 and failed this section too. Any tutors to recommend? I stay in CCK. Tks

Hi,I'm in secondary1 now, but after reading all your comments, I can advise that for English, it is much easier to write small notes at the side and what can help is that the child highlights the 4W1H and circles the tenses. For Maths, slowing down and reading the question helps a lot. For Science, I agree with beanbear. Patterns must be seen in order to answer the questions correctly.
All the best to all the mums,dd and ds!
Pls help to ellaborate what you mean by 4W1H (sorry don't understand the abbreviation) and circles the tenses for English paper?
Where can this strategy be used? -

Why
Where
Who
What
How -
mother777:
If I am not wrong, it should be 5Ws & IH. 5Ws are What, Why, Who, When, Where & H refers to How.

The circling of tenses can be used in both comprehensions and some grammar questions. Another tip that can be used is that read the questions before the passage. This would narrow down the criteria and what to search for in the passage.

Thanks to your generosity in sharing on this forum, i had been so inspired that I can help my own child. I was filled with doubts about being able to teach my own child especially trying to rein in my own anger & frustrations, often feeling impatient. God's grace really helped to give me strength to carry on.
Thanks to your tips on comprehension, DS is also making good progress in comprehension. Previously, DS would get 3-4 marks out of 20 and after using your annotation method, he managed to get 12 out of 20 for the recent CA. I'm hopeful that he will continue to make progress.
Thanks to your recommendation, I attended Dr Cheah's workshops recently and went away with nuggets. Had many ah-ha moments. Wished she could teach our children but since she can't, parents will have to use what she has taught us to continue to guide our children.
It's wonderful that we have this community in KSP where we can have the abundance mentality to share and help each other. -

You are very welcome beanbear. Glad too that you found Dr C's workshops useful. Some moons ago, a Mummy blessed me with Dr C's contact and I am just glad to be able to pass the blessings on.psle2011mum:

Chenonceau - yes, our few fish will feed a multitude, our small ripple will stir a frenzy in the mighty seas.
God bless!
