      Way2GO:
      Teach your children to swim.

I can understand garmen thinking esp for boys having to go thro NS.
If the boys don't clear NAPFA and knows how to swim b4 they serve NS in combat vocations - they will suffer more.
      1st sit:
When I was a trainee in NS, I didn't know how to swim properly. In one of the training session to test your confidence, each of us in No. 4 dress with boots was made to go up the 10m platform to go jump into the pool.
      Me at 10m platform looking down: \"I can't swim\"
      Instructor: \"jump!\"
Silly me buay kia si just jump. Thought I would drown on the way down , but thank GOD Archimedes Principle n natural buoyancy works.

      2nd sit - river crossing:
We were being trained for river crossing using a rope across the river n using an infantry assault bridge. Before this exercise, we were instructed to get into the river with SBO n rifle and just float about. Trust me, it's scary if one can't swim cos' u are thinking all this weight is gonna drag me down.
With the assault bridge, there is no lifeline or guyline - and u are probably thinking what if I misstep and fall into the river.

So..please teach your children to swim.
heng ah, ah boy already got his bronze. so scary for the non-swimmers who cannot :siam:

what if the kid had bad eczema?

any idea whether she/he can be exempted from the compulsory swimming lesson with a letter from doctor/parents? or it depends on school policy? :?

Usually can be exempted from swimming lesson if there is a letter from doctor. Cos those who has eczema MUST avoid swimming in chlorinated water.

Such kid must shower immmediately after swimming or even just a dip on the chlorinated pool. Use screenblock if necessary and they must avoid hot sun too. Hope this help.

              Just to share:
My boy has ezcema and he's attending swimming lessons. As his lessons are at night, we do not apply sunblock for him.

Instead, we apply a barrier cream for him. Doctor recommended Physiogel CREAM to be applied half hour before he gets in the pool. To be extra KS, I also applied a goat's milk based diaper rash cream on the ezcema prone areas (armpits and neck).

As the pool's shower is not warm water, we normally wait till we get home to bathe him (just wipe and change at pool). He did not have any flare up after starting swimming classes.

                  Hi Bicky,

I am a swimming coach and the attached link shows an article that I have written for my students and their parents to understand more about the Swimsafer test and timeline. It is based on my teaching methods. Perhaps you might find it useful as a guide. Cheers

Hi i3mum, in my DD's sec sch they requested for minimum Level 3.

Students without that minimum level are encouraged to join school's initiative with the coaches from neighbourhood pool. The neighbourhood pool not very near but all of them will walk together to the pool. Without Level 3, the child may not be allowed to join certain camps or trips organized by the school as they require all their students' competency level to be standard. Then again, different schools may have different protocols.
