3 Year Old Niece In ICU (Hospitalised)
-
Hi,
Thankyou everybody for the concern and advises.
I just came back from the hospital.
There is a liver specialist appointed to care my niece. I manage to catch the specialist as he came. They are currently doing all the tests to find out the causes for the liver malfunctioning. These includes testing for hep A, B,C, viruses, and the whole spectrum of bacterias and other conditions that may cause it and they ruling out some possibilities one by one and that is why it takes time. They even rope in an infectious disease specialist but so far no cause has been determined yet. However, not able to pin point the cause doesn’t mean that the patient will not recover for the case of liver. they said, for liver disease, 40-50% of cases can’t determine the cause of damage but patients nevertheless recovered.
For my niece, it is an acute case and not chronic. They are doing two blood tests daily. These are mainly to monitor the quantitative indicators in the blood which point to the health of the liver. The few most important indicators are, ammonia level, billirubin level, PT level and one more which I can’t remember. My niece’s level for the above parameters have been stable to slightly lowering. Once the liver starts repairing itself, the above parameters level should drop drastically and we should know in the next few days since her level is stabilising and should be a good sign. If it worsened, then a liver transplant will be needed.
For now, we are cautiously optimistic but my sister get worried with any words such as "acute", "critical" etc… -
Since I started the thread, I’ll give a brief account of the progress.
My niece condition is improving judging from the time that she is awake and the objective parameters that are measured from the blood tests.
Basically, all the major parameters indicating liver injury have started to come down (meaning improving liver condition). These parameters are still high by normal standard but the start of a reduction and her length of awake time is unmistaken sign that her liver is restoring its health.
We are all relief. -
:rahrah: :rahrah: :congrats:

Definitely a great relief to hear! :rahrah: -
The doctor maybe very close to finding the cause of her liver problem.
We have to wait till tomorrow for the confirmation test.
My niece is both lucky and unlucky. I’ll update all of you tomorrow. -
No. The doctors cannot find the cause of the acute liver failure and my niece is still in ICU.
Although she is conscious, the blood tests suggest that her liver is deteriorating.
They are prepared for the worst and that is a liver transplant.
My sister has got second opinion from Nancy Tan from Gleneagle and she supports the go ahead with liver transplant. the transplant won’t be done in KKH but at NUH where there is an experienced team.
