Hi i30, MSG = Mean Subject Grade, can I say, its the average subject score for the whole level ? :?

Sorry, I still do not understand, what this MSG can affect your dd's decision on choosing subjects ? Sorry if I sound a bit blur

My dd has chosen double science and double humanities. For L1R5, R1 has to be a humans subj, at least she can have 2 choices. She needs to get better grades for R2 & R3 (Math, Sc & Humans), therefore she may need tuitions for Math & Sc. As L1 is also very impt, my dd is also thinking of EL & HCL tuition. Are 4 tuitions too time consuming for a Sec 3 student? She is mugging her CCA/CIP points this sch hol.

My sis had tuition for the following:

          - Chem
          - Physics
          - A maths
          - E maths

And she had 'tuition' with me:
          - English
          - Geography
          - Literature

She got A1 for CCA πŸ™‚ Thanks to the numerous competitions & performances.
She is also in an orchestra playing the violin. They have practises once a week.

Time management is impt. My sis is not the top scorer type, but she manages her time quite well (with nagging by me). She still has alot of time for R&R (hang out at shopping centres after school with friends, probably once a fornight).

              She's from PLMGS.

Results wise she's hovering in the Bs & Cs region. Used to get alot of Cs but improved to high Bs after tuition. Maths became As. School's papers are quite tough, sometimes no one get As in the whole level.

Workload in terms of homework is quite heavy. The school does stretch the girls. They also have alot of projects (Innovation week, etc). Usually homework is due around 3-4 days after the teacher gives it to them, so as long as she plans her time well, homework can be completed on time without worry.

Her S3 year, she still had violin exams (Grade 7 or 8, can't rmb) on top of orchestra. Only her O level year I manage to persuade my mum to let her take a break from violin.

Normal school hours end at 2pm. Monday & Friday are long days, timetable ends at 4.30pm. If I recall correctly, Monday, Tuesday & Friday are her CCA days (harp - she needs to practise as we did not buy a harp for her at home). On CCA days, she finish at 6pm, sometimes drag till 7pm, esp nearing SYF.

Her Chem & Phy tuition by the same tutor is on Tuesday 6 - 9pm. If her CCA ends late, she'll reach late & stay late. Tutor's place is 3min walk from my parent's place. Sometimes her tuition ends at 10+pm, she'll buy supper on her way back, eat & do homework at the same time.

Wednesday is enrichment day in school. For upper sec, there's no fixed enrichment, only adhoc ones. So most of her Wednesdays are spent with me, going through her work. Around 1-2 hours per subject.

Thursday is her 'free' day. She tries to arrange her Maths tuition on Mon & Thu. But her tutor is a HOD who is very busy, so sometimes her tuition is Monday/Thursday evening & Sat early morning (9am). Thu afternoons she'll either go out or laze around at home (usually spent sleeping).

She has the whole Saturday to catch up on work not completed & revise. Most of the time, she's watching TV & online.

Sunday is spent at church and after church she goes out with her friends for lunch/shopping. They have sports activities on alternate weeks. She comes back around 5-6pm on Sundays.

Usually no one is home in the afternoons except for me & my sis. I'll nag at her to do some work.
She sleeps alot. If she had a tiring day at school, she'll nap once she reach home. She loves to sleep, so she'll make sure she sleeps by 10pm, latest 11pm if she has alot of work to do.

By the way, my parents are always saying that they do not see my sis studying or doing homework at all. When probed, she says that she finishes her work in school during free pockets of time (waiting for next teacher, waiting for CCA to start, lunch break, etc). I do not get any complains from her teachers about late work or slip shod work, so I guess she's managing well.

Results wise we don't expect too much cos she's not an academic person from young. We don't push her or stress her as she can't take too much stress - she'll get migraines. We are happy as long as she can go to Poly & take a course she likes. My parents already have plans for her to go overseas for her uni education. Plus they've already prepared cushy jobs for her if she chooses not to further her studies. πŸ˜›

Oh ya, Friday nights are orchestra practise nights. She’ll reach home about 10+ or 11pm if my parents bring her out for supper.

Hi daisyt, sorry for the misleading. I should use "grade" or "score" for individual subject, instead of "MSG". MSG refers to the the average grade of all subjects for a pupil. So every pupil has grade for each of her subjects and an average grade (MSG) for all the subjects she has been examed. The individual grade of a subject affect your decision whether you want to choose the same subject for advanced study. Anyway, most of the pupils like to choose the subjects that they can get good marks easily.

She has alot of project work. There's a good balance of individual & group project. Usually group project they'll try to discuss in school & split the work up to complete individually at home, then meet up again to combine & collate. Quite effective method to suit their schedules. Sometimes the project needs them to come together, they'll come to my house on Sunday. I monitor them so that they will get down to work instead of play & chit chat.

She enjoys her schedule cos she still has time to laze around & watch TV/surf net. Her friends don't even get such 'luxuries'. She saves alot of travelling time for tuition cos my dad sends her there & picks her up. He's semi-retired, so has alot of time on his hands. Sometimes I help to pick her up from tuition too.

& you must add something which I forgot. She takes time out to play with my son too. They'll play hide & seek at home or she'll bring him to the park to play at the playground. Sometimes she helps me fetch him home from school too (his school is opposit her school).

It's all about being positive & managing time well. My sis used to suck at managing her time in Primary school. We had to nag & help her plan her time before she finally understood.
