2009 GEP Screening And Selection

Is it true that the teachers at NYPS are not as caring? Do they expect the GEP kids to still be sent for tuition/ enrichment and therefore the teachers do not need to provide as much guidance?

When I spoke to my DS' Science teacher regarding my DS' poor performance in Science tests, the impression I got from the teacher is that since my DS does not know how to give 'complete' answers for the open-ended type of questions,( thus causing DS to lose marks), then my DS might need extra help in getting drilled on such questions (i.e tuition? ) This does bother me.

i think earlier pages write-up from parents already explain the selection criteria is not totally base on academic result. My son asked me the same question as to why his classmate, top in all subjects, was not selected... I believe there is no perfect screening process, and the selection process still need to fine-tune further as experience accumulated and feedback received. I can't explain this to him in term of selection process. What I tried to explain to him is that GEP is not to say u must be strongest or smartest or even gifted, but you might be able to answer some General Abilities questions e.g. NAMES THAT TEACHERS CAN'T PRONOUNCE... that they think u are suitable for the inquisitive nature of yours. Wa-la! U are selected!

my boss daughter was from RGPS GEP. According to him they are really caring and always when PSLE comes they are well prepared etc... but nothing special in QA session for RGPS as there was no specific question to the school.

my dd top the standard in P1 and P2. but this year she marks dropped and she no longer top every subj, tho she is still amongst the top. i thk in P1 and P2, it is easier to score very well if the child is extremely careful during tests/exams.

i went thru dd's SA papers, her mistakes were blatant careless ones. dunno y her attitude so chim chai this year.

No, not neccessary top but most of them are among the top la, or you call the top 2 classes at P3.

Tao Nan is also a SAP school.

Tao Nan is SAP, BICEP pgm. now 3 classes. so is it not popular. but any way as for GEP all school are same. just see the location and if you want SAP school

No, not neccessary top but most of them are among the top la, or you call the top 2 classes at P3.

yeah, think so too. The probablity of top students being selected is higher. Band 3 students getting selected into GEP, I suppose should have, just fewer

Hhmmm... they've always had Guided Tours in the past. My dd was asked to speak to the prospective parents too. Last year, one of the parents even sought her out during recess to ask her more questions.

Yes, the GEP teachers at RGPS are very caring. I don't know how they compare to the teachers at NYPS because I'm not familiar with them. The times my dd has fallen ill and had to miss school, the teachers have always reassured me that health was most important and that we shouldn't worry about missed lessons and homework.

One thing that struck me was that the teachers always tell the students and parents that tuition and external enrichment was not necessary. Everything they need to know they will learn in school. For the weaker students, remedial classes will be conducted.

Having said that, RGPS GEP teachers expect a lot of their students. I say this because my dd has compared what they do at RGPS with some of her friends from another GEP school and they seem to cover less. The teachers have high standards and the girls do perform well generally.

This is pretty reassuring to me, that the teachers do not encourage tuition. I do not want to make my ds spend so much time on lessons, that he would have little time to play and just be a kid. However, his poor performance in Science and Maths is having me worried. Can't help but feel that he is not being given the extra help he needs at school.

As for your dd's observation, who does the word 'they' refer to here - RGPS or the other GEP school?
