2012 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Because Singapore schools emphasize Testing more than Teaching. The kids do the exams to be differentiated (NOT to learn)... never mind if Teachers make mistakes in marking and kids are erroneously differentiated.DS' school does not release actual marks for oral and composition too.
We have spoken to the school many times, including VP, HOD etc, politely asking but they still refused. Only a range of marks eg. 41-45 is given. The compo papers are not returned even to the pupils to look.
My question : Why make the children take an exam and not know where were the mistakes made ?
This is another non-standardised practice in our schools. -
My dc sch will give out model essays to them after getting back their marked compo. They told me no corrections done. So they are all suppose to learn fr model essays!
-
Jia You all mummies!
I went through what you are experiencing now last year and thus I understand.
It is an unforgettable nightmare!
I am now totally hands-off to concentrate on my career. -
anyone send their child to any June PSLE preperation class? Do mummies think those class help?

At least you get something to look at and work on....For us, NOTHING is given back. -
Good sign that your daughter cry after the CA.
Looks like she is a good student.
Those who did badly and still bo-chap will certainly liao!
In any case, a friend passed me a book with an interesting title.
Maths Without Tears by Fabian Ng.
It contains full papers with full solutions.
Very good support for weak students.
I like the following words in Fabian’s Foreword, which is really reassuring.
You have in your hands a book which will help you to excel in the PSLE.
I trust that this book will be a great blessing to many pupils.
It will certainly bring much joy, meaning and satisfaction in the learning of mathematics for those who cherish it. -

I go through my son's marked class compos too because his teacher makes grammatical mistakes and misses out his real mistakes. After going through, will point out to him those that were marked wrongly and also ask him to note his real mistakes.
Therefore, parents need to pay tuition centres to mark, GRADE, and comment on our children's compos. Since last year, I have to re-correct my son's compos from exams and class practices. His teacher makes too many spelling and grammar mistakes... misses out other mistakes... and gives few comments. How to learn from school like that. -

It is a common practice that teachers only give the grade or the range but not the actual mark. My boy was told that he got above 30 for compo & A for oral.Is it the norm for your dc sch not to release compo & oral marks?
For EL, only situational writing marks were 'given' (cos I managed to see it tho teacher blanko it off). H/e, no marks on compo writing given tho the paper was returned. Ds & dd said teacher dun tell dem marks for compo. I can only gauged the combined std of compo+oral. Even during PT mtg, teacher usually give general feedback like ok rather than telling the score. When checking grade, they will also cover the list to prevent us fr 'peeping'. -

Hmmmmm.... Why is this common practice though? Common may not be right. In times past in Singapore ... spitting was common too.
