Is it sufficient to engage a local undergrad to tutor sec 4 IP students on a 1-1 basis ? Or is it necessary to engage ex-teacher for that subject? What are the things to consider? TIA

Your kid need not hve to sit for O-level so no need to use a big gun and burn a hole in your pocket unless situation demands it.

You can use a local undergrad which is more than sufficent. The following are the pointers:

1. For science subjects, use undergrad from science falculties rather than engineering.Regarding maths, may also engage undergrads from business schools.
2. For lang and art subjects, engage undergrads from arts and social studies majoring in the respective subjects.
3. Check that these undergrads had score distinctions in their respective subjects at A-level.

You need to monitor your kids progress and ensure the results have shown a marked improvement. Tuition rate is approx $30/hr.

At yr 5 IP, the rate is approx $35/hr for undergrads and $100/hr for graduates of well-known unis.

In general, gender is not an issue as you just source for a suitable candiate for the job.

However, unlike primary levels where the ladies dominate the tuition scene, at upper sec to jc levels, the guys are ahead in the science subjects and on par in arts subjects.

I know an experienced tutor who teaches chinese. She teaches Pre-school to Secondary school students. She has been teaching for about 21 years. 13 years in mainland china and 8 in Singapore. She is patient and loves children. After my children was taught by her, they were able to attain A1 for their express chinese O paper and A stars for their PSLE chinese paper. my son's tutor helped him to get from E to A in a very short period of time. I would recommend her. However, she will only teach if the parents works together with her. She's very strict but my son loves and respects her a lot.She's a honors NTU bio science grad and current teaching in a top school and will teach Secondary Maths and chemistry. Currently my niece’s grades are F9 for all 5 subjects above and there’s streaming this year for her. So we 're looking at some miracle here. My niece is smart but needs a tutor to answer all her questions.

Wow. Quite rare to find Geography, History, Literature and Home Econs tutor. But my girl's Science tutor is not bad.
