Hi Champion,I did not get this question anywhere. I happened to see the term \"internal fertilisaton of eggs\" as one of the options provided in an MCQ Science question (Lower Block) and I got to wondering what is this internal/external fertilisation thingy.I googled it and these terms exist but the info was too messy and haphazard so I decided to ask the in-house experts here 🙂

Anyone out there who can enlighten me further, please do so.
      Thanks very much!

        Hi Champion,

Can you explain a little more about the complete vs incomplete metamorphosis of insects? I have not come across these terms.

        Thanks! 😂

          Hi! Hi! 😄
Me too - I first came across this term in my DD1's tuition class note last year when she was in P3. Thereafter read out the notes from the following guide book:-
Primary 3/4 Lower Block Everything You Need To Know About Science [Paperback]
          https://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=265&vpd001=97100#
          http://i46.tinypic.com/2cqb440.jpg\">

          Extract from page 209,
          Life Cycle of an Insect
An insect goes through several stages of development in its life cycle.
Metamorphosis refers to the way insects develop, grow and change their forms. Metamorphosis actually means change. There are two types of metamorphosis - incomplete and complete.
An insect which undergoes incomplete metamorphosis has three stages [egg--nymph--adult] (eg Grasshopper) in its life cycles. An insect which undergoes complete metamorphosis has four stages [egg--larva--pupa--adult] (eg mealworm bettle) in its life cycle.

Just above for little sharing with all parents here :grphug:

Btw, Agonymun, incomplete-complete metamorphosis can also be found in Ultimate Science.

Thanks for the :grphug:Champion.Really needed it…sometimes,it feels so lonely dealing with all these questions which I had not learnt before and there are just so many assessment and guide books in the market that I don’t know which ones to get.If I buy them all, will either go bankrupt or mad from all the reading!

Which assessment books are good to help with section b? My dd lost unnecessary marks there.

Hi, can someone enlighten me please?

                  TIA

1.Are clouds water in a liquid state? What are clouds made of actually? (For P3)

                  2. Can provide more detailed explanation regarding the reproduction of the onion ie bulb? Is ginger in the same group?

                  3. Does the embryo of the chick feed on egg yolk alone or both yolk and egg white?

                  4. Does the fruit fly have a 3 or 4-stage life cycle?

                    1) Clouds are made up of tiny water droplets. Thus, they are in the liquid state. Water droplets are visible but water vapour is not.

                    2) A bulb is a shortened, compressed, underground stem which is surrounded by fleshy scales (leaves) that envelop a central bud located at the tip of the stem.

When conditions are suitable, a bulb develops into a young plant. When the young plant grows into an adult plant, new bulbs are formed at the base. Here, a new plant would be able to grow again.

Some plants reproduce from plant parts as it is a faster process compared to reproducing from seeds.

eg -- reproduce from underground stem - Ginger, Onion, Potato.

                    3) The embryo develops into the chick. The egg yolk provides the developing embryo with nutrient.

                    4) The fruit fly has a stage life cycle -- egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

                      Hi Champion,

Thanks so much for your reply. :thankyou:

a)The answer sheet states that both egg yolk and egg white provide nutrients for the developing embryo. What is the function of the egg white if it is not food for the embryo? Is it to protect the yolk and embryo?

                      b)Do underground stems mean bulbs?

                      Thanks in advance!

                        Hi Agony Mum

am surprised these are tested at P3. Remember studying some of these when I was P4/5 decades ago... (how times have changed 😓 ).

Just to add on to Champion's reply, both egg white and yolk serve as food for the embryo during incubation. Think it's the albumen in the white that provides nutrients /water to the embryo. However, the white also serve as a protection for the yolk.

Also, regarding the bulb/ginger question, to be more precise a ginger is a rhizome although they (be it bulbs or tubers or rhizomes or stolon/runners) are all broadly categorised as underground stems. But not all underground stems are bulbs. Hope I have not confused you. 😄

btw, just out of curiosity, did you get these questions from assessment books or exam papers?

                        Cheers
                        Ponyo
