We will have to take one step at a time...though. Studying A level here will invlove getting thro' Maths, Physics & Chem which are subjects just managable now & it will require more focus & effort which i guess is not worth if you are not Science student.

If your dd's forte is in humanities and languages, she can choose to do a humanities programme in JC. No need for her to take Physics/Chem/Bio. Her contrasting subject can be Econs.

I think for humanities programme in JC, the contrast subject is Knowledge & Inquiry (KI) or from the Maths /Science group (not sure can don't do Maths in JC). Economics is a Arts Subject.

You can check out VJC website on their humanities programme >>

All humanities students must take 4h2 with english lit as a compulsory subject others include hist/geog, maths, econs, KI(can be used as a contrasting subject as well as exempted from H1 GP). Applicants must qualify for admission to jcs with humanities programme ie RI, HCI,VJC,NJC and ACJC.

If a student opts not to take H2 maths, make sure that he/she has O-level a-maths pass to qualify for psychology and business schs. Of course i am referring to our unis.

The other alternative for DadofGirl to explore is to finish her IB/A-levels, go to NUS(arts and social science major in psychology), NTU psychology or SMU(social science major in psychology) and proceed to do her master in psychology in UMichigan(USA), Stanford(USA) or UCL(London) as opposed to bridging programme in a community college and then to her desired uni in USA.

Must work out the total cost as one needs to read up to at least a master level inorder to do clinical research(psychology).

Why is it that JCs do not allow History and Geography to be taken together as H2 subjects?

Thank you Edureach for drawing path ahead. Thank you Jtoh for pointing out Science irrelevance at JC.
It is bit early to think ahead & rightly pointed out Cost must be worked out. SMU Scocial science course is one of the option , for that to happen , admission to good JC & surviving Maths at JC is going to be a Major challange.

A-levels in singapore is so boring and too stressful the way JCs run their programmes. Starting college earlier and working to a masters earlier is really a good suggestion by Edureach. Provided financial situation allows, lah. I had friends who went the USA route under Parents' support last time, but no choice for me bc no funds as it was still easier for me to fund my education by going thru JC and then local Univ - tuition plus holiday work still managed to fund my course fees until I went out to work. Impossible to do that overseas.

Thank you much for offering insight. Until you hear personal experience , it is hard to break conventional path/wisdom.
There are more singapore schools offering IP programs /More IB programs are beign offered here & some of the developing contries are going to scrap Secondary school Exams(Equ to O levels) to go direct to pre-uni exam. If you put all these trends togather, it is hard to ignore A level's redundency.

Unless the overseas university is in the top 200 list, I see no point in spending tons of $$$ going overseas. It would have been otherwise better spent in the stock market (for dividends & capital gains) or some property for rental income.

Why the hurry? Is the world going to end soon? And don’t you think that by going through A levels or at least even IB, will help your daughter write academic grade essays, especially if she’s going to do a subject like psychology.

The 2 extra years also means that the student will be more matured by the time she gets to 1st year uni- 18-19 years vs going there at 16-17. Don’t you think all these years make a difference? Unless the uni is some degree mill, that is…

I agree with realitysg. Why the hurry? Doing their A levels may not be a bad thing. Besides completing uni 2 years earlier may not proof that the child has any advantage over his/her peers?

I remembered a classmate who went overseas (US) straight after O levels in order to save a year. If you think about it, you dont save that much. Term starts in Sep, hence after O levels, one would have to wait for 8 months doing nothing - that is 3 qtr of a year gone, when your peers would have almost completed JC1.
When you start your term in Sep and complete the \"one year\", your peers would have almost completed JC2.... think about it
