Foie Gras - felt guilty after eating it

Went for fine dining gathering at a house where the host is a chef.

Foie gras was on the menu.
I have never eaten foie gras as I personally feel that animals should not be subjected to adverse treatment when they are alive and should be killed for food in the fastest manner.
However I thought that it would be impolite for me to decline such an expensive dish which was so painstakingly prepared by the host.
So I ate it.
As I gulped down the liver, my heart cried out for the goose.
However, I thought since the goose had already ended up on the platter, I might as well eat it rather than jeopardize my relationship with the host, and if I had not eaten it, it would have ended in someone else’s stomach.
I guess in future, I would have to find out the menu before accepting such an invitation.

Yup.... for that matter, I never buy shark fins.
But if served I will offer it to others, but if no one takes it, I will eat it.
From what I understand, the shark dies shortly after its fins are cut.
But the goose is force fed for a few weeks before it is slaughtered.

I will have no qualms about telling the host/chef if served food that I do not eat. Fine dining or not. It should not be taken as an affront to his cooking, just that different people have different taste, especially when it involves food that are more exotic.

I agree with you to tell the host if I really cannot stomach certain food due to personal preference.
However in this case, to decline based on my opinion that it is unacceptable to treat the animal in such a manner before slaughtering it, may spark off a debate which is likely to end up no where.
Sigh..... I guess I won't be going to such an event anymore.
I can't believe I ate it.
Even my gal said that I should have rejected it.

No need to state your opinion mah, just say not your cup of tea. I know, not absolutely honest. Sometimes a white lie may be necessary.

Thanks for making me feel not so guilty.
I felt bad cos my gal said that by eating it, I am supporting the trade.

This reminded me of my first encounter with foie gras.


My first foie gras was at a top french restaurant in Singapore. It was a company function. I almost puked when I ate it while people around me were enjoying the "delicacy". In fact, I felt really sick and felt like vomitting after that.
I was never a liver person to begin… The 2nd time they brought us to equinox and foie gras on the menu again (as boss is french).

I just politely declined and offered it to someone else…I just cannot bring myself to stomach it.

Actually I love it but have stopped cos I do feel guilty but whenever it is offered, I will eat cos I like it and deed has already been done the the animal…


Don’t need to feel too bad lah…the animal’s suffering at least was over once it was dead…
