My son is going primary 1 next year and I am eligible for phase 2b under a good school but it took two hours of time of bus transport to n fro from home. The kid have to be at the bus stop at 6am waiting for bus. That school have proven track record for the past many years because of it’s strict standards. Now, my headache is there Is a relatively new school which is only a few years old n has not proven track records n the highest psle scores is 230plus. This school is just downstairs my home but it’s in the phase 2c. School starts at 8am. But school is using a different approach of teaching n they are not results oriented school. It’s a mixed school. I’m in a delimna now whether to opt for that good school or just neigbourhood school for convenience sake? If I choose that good school, my daughter cannot get in that school as it’s a all boys school. Any good advice? Good school for good pri school foundation or just neighborhood school for convenience sake?

First of all, how far are u from the school? Within 1km or 1 - 2km? If near, don't take school bus, send yourself.

Any balloting history for the neighbourhood school under 2C?

For me, two hours is just too long. Your child will need to wake up at 5:30am meaning that he should be in bed by 7:30pm every evening if he won't nap in the afternoon. Are you able to do that? As he gets older, there will be more after-school activities so he will be coming back very late.

You say that the new school is not results-oriented. I think what you mean is that they don't make exam results the be all & end all. Isn't that a good thing? Your child will be able to enjoy school and not be pressurised. He may even flourish better in that environment. Added to that, I expect the facilities will be better in a new school and they will be out to prove themselves so may be putting in more effort than a more established school.

The new school is less than 1km n it’s phase 2c. To my surprise, for the phase 1, out of 210 slots, 118 has been taken up. There have been so many negative feedbacks abt this school that it do worries parents on how n what this school teaches our kids. The school principal told us that if we looking for results oriented school then that school is not for us. Cos they r s school who want student to learn beyond the classroom.

Anyone know if apply for 2b, get in n regretted, can we apply for 2c?

The good school is few mrt stations away. Problem also, who going to fetch him home? Big headache. Date is getting closer n I’m getting more n more confused… If good school but last in class, will boy have low self esteem? Heard those good school will push the students like calling parents every now n then to tell parents send kids to tuition or buy more assessments, to get the desired results they wan. Will kids b happy in a environment like this? Or just simply go to school which r nearest n close case? Indeed, it’s hard decision to make when I still have a younger daughter who cannot go to the all boys school n have to go thru the phase all over again. Any good advice parents? Really big headache…

Hi gekktan, is there any chance to get in the good school via phase 2b >2km? My observation is most popular schools usually do not have any chance for > 2km even for 2b. How about historical numbers?

i won’t go for this school whereby "out of 210 slots, 118 had been taken in Phase 1". As you stay in Sengkang, can consider Rivervale ? how far is your distance to Rivervale ?

                        Gekktan,

My question will be also, while you eligible for phase 2b of a boys school, what are your chances? My neighbour was eligible for phase2b in pei hwa pri but could not get in. She faced ballot again in phase 2c.
If you can get in phase 2b to the boys school, does it have good affiliation to a reasonable secondary school?
Personally for me, if travelling takes up too much time and I can’t relocate, I will forgo the so call good school. But I will be wary about schools with too new curriculum and who made statements like ‘don’t choose us if you are concern about results orientad schools’. The school could have reassured parents that with learning beyond class room, results will fall in place when it is time. I hope that is only the interpretation of the person who heard this such comments.
