      Scary:
The better teachers were assigned to teach the top classes while the average teachers were tasked to teach the last few classes in Sec 1/2. Most of the students in these last few classes ended up in the Arts stream in Sec 3/4.

With or without affiliation, the kid should still work hard. Affiliation may give a false sense of security that there's already a safety net, ie affiliated sec sch to go to.

Side track, it seems like there's really some truth to this: in general, better teachers are assigned to teach better schools, and better teachers teach better classes. And so there's a mad rush for gd schools and to be streamed into gd classes! Stress doesn't just stop after getting into a gd Sch, in fact it gets elevated as the child goes to higher levels of learning. A society that over focus on grades is really robbing our children of their precious childhood.

I was in a dilemma thinking that getting into MGS guaranteed a 12 yrs of no worry but I saw incidents that pupils from the primary sch got into the affiliated sec sch with a lower COP however competing with other pupils that come from other sch with a higher score, the students from the affiliated pri sch have difficulties to cope with the class cos their standards are not as good as those from other sch.

I sometimes wonder is it good or bad??
MGS is a band 1 school, meaning that its avg O level score for L1R5 is under 11. If you think about it, a large numbers of her students are from the the affiliated Pri school, COP at 220 and yet she is able to achieve a Band 1 status. Thus, I feel that the school can deliver. I have personally seen kids going in @ 220-230 ending up with 6-8 points at Os. It also has in place a good character development programme that spans the whole 10 years. You should see the myraid of CCAs it offers. All in all, it provides a good holistic education for a child.

In any case, I feel that Sec school education is a very different ball game from Pri - who is to say that non-stellar PSLE score translates to inability to cope in Sec school? In Sec school, everyone starts on a new page and competition isn't always a bad thing.

As parents, we can only do so much for our children - they will need to put in the rest of the effort in their educational journey.

Of course, MGS is definitely a good sch. But IMHO, it all really depend on the child. If the child works hard, whether he is in an affiliated sch or not, he will excel well. Thus the point here is that it’s not a must to put your child in an affiliated sch but a must that he has to work hard in order to excel.

Agree. If the child is mature and hardworking (or intelligent), it does not matter where you put him/her. However, for those who mature later, putting them in an affiliated school is some form of insurance for the parents I guess. :xedfingers:

Parents who intend to enrol their daughter into RGPS for 2014 P1 intake (ie. girls born in 2007: year of golden piglet), may take note :-

2014 P1 (Mount Sinai): PM session
2015 P2 (Mount Sinai): PM session

2016 P3 to 2019 P6 (shift back to Hillcrest permanently): Single session

Kids from non-affiliated pri schools will have to work harder to get into their choice sec schools...my son is one example. My daughter is definitely a late-bloomer...this is one reason why hubby & I thought of registering her in my former school with affiliation. Hope she matures by then and works harder to get into a better class.

Correct & it's on dual track (IP & Os). Once you gained entry, it's almost guaranteed 10-12 years of no-worry. Can relax a little for PSLE.

Some more it's a full school so you get a longer Nov/Dec holiday than everyone else πŸ˜‰

Thanks to Luanee & Keroppi for above explanation on differences of MGS over RGPS.

Actually, I was referring to the post on various academic % quality score comparison made by phtthp (In Novena thread on comparing SCGS against various GEP schools) but do not see MGS pit against RGPS.

Appreciate to know if there are comparison made.

                        TIA

                        Here you go:
                        EL Math Sci CL2
                        2011\tMGS\t91.2%\t75.4%\t83.3%\t94.2%
                        2011\tRGPS \t85.3%\t74.2%\t73.5%\t91.5%

Actually the mean t-scores of both schools not that different for 2011. MGS's is peculiar in that the percentages suggests a higher mean t-score than what is acheived; it's like MGS girls just want to make the grade but dont care that much about getting a high score.
