          Hi Belle,

Welcome...I'm equally clueless about it. I doubt it will be that stressful for primary 1 for KC. Many a times the stress came from parents themselves loading the child with tuitions and enrichment course...haha

              Hello all Parents,

My daughter is only due to register for P1 in 2013 and I am also considering CHIJ Katong. I read all the thread and the common themes seems to be that the school provides a balance between academic demands and building the character of the student. Could any parents with kids still in IJ share how the school and its Catholic based education has help to shape your child cope with the crazy demands of a results based society focusing on exam success and fantastic grades?

              Apprciate any advise.

My daughter will be going to IJ Katong next year and my son is currently in Maris Stella. One thing I realise is whether my child faces academic stress is very much dependant on how anxious I want him to excel. If I am fine with him not being in the top 5% of his cohort, not being a prize winner for any subject, I don't even bother if he fails his tests and exams, he will be alright. So, how a child cope will depends on how much stress we give them.

Havent been in here for quite a while so massive reply.

Congratulations to all. Once again, Welcome!
Augmum : I wish the clock can stop here. I don't want my younger girl to grow up.
Reginalcl : Parents will worry abt their kids even when they're in their 50s.  I never knew why my mom was so strict with me until I'm a mom myself.
Xeern : There's a studentcare near the school. Usually two lady staffs would pick the girls up from school. Check this : http://houseofhotshotz.com.sg/
Realsimple : I was so proud when my girl wore the pinafore. But I must say I was glad the school badge is sewn on. How many times we lost our badge? Or almost cut ourselves/our friends.  And then run to bookshop to buy our badge. The secondary schools uses the pin badge but no house colours on top. And the sewn on belt. Aiyoh! I kept losing my belt at home, so I had to use one belt for my 2 pinafores until I find it. When the school celebrated their 80th anniversary 2 yrs back, I felt so proud. And told my girl, maybe for the 100th anniversary the  50++ old me,her n her daughter - 3 generation can go together.
Awval : Once an IJ girl, always an IJ girl. Be it whether you're from another IJ family, we hold the same motto - Simple in virtue; steadfast in duty. And I have no idea when they had this song that is sung across IJ schools besides the Father Barre Song. It's titled Hold On To Our Dreams. Very nice tune.
Belle Army : stressful? Usually it's the parents who give their kids stress. Homeworks? Guess don't expect too much in P1, however it's dependent on teachers.

aamama - What? The belt is now sewn on? Really? Hard to picture it. Yes, I tend to lose my belts last time. Sometimes the belt colour and uniform colour might not match if I used an old belt with a new uniform.

Would love to be involved in the school activities and volunteering to help out. Would parents who are working be able to contribute too or are the activities mainly during school hours?

Realsimple : The belt is sewn at the back. So they still need to velcro n hook it in the front.

There are various help needed in the school, some help in library; CCA; reading program; canteen etc… Then there is another one - adhoc. They help in whatever events the school have n require help. They’re all during school hours. There are SAHMs as well as working parents. Won’t force you to help at every event, that’s what volunteering is about anyway. But I must say I do enjoy myself helping out in the school once in a while. The girls are really sweet, some will stop running and greet you. Then the girls in your dd’s class know you also. My girl likes me to be in her school and a few times ‘volunteered me in class first’ and then tell me later. Sabo me!! when I get to know the girls, it kindda made me appreciate my dd n realize whatever silly behavior she does at home is seen in some other girls. Coz she’s my firstborn I’m always learning to be a parent.
There used to be Contact Time on Wednesdays. Not every week though, haven’t heard abt it for quite awhile now too so not sure if still ongoing.   One mummy will teach something eg. once we fried some noodles ; another time a creative mom taught us to scrapbook. We come together to talk abt anything; thru that we share n learn from the older girls parents. Received so many tips from them.

Anyway, during Orientation Day the CPC group will be there to recruit more parents.

How is CHIJ Katong Convent academic standing today
(compared with other “All Girls” School) ?
