Thanks w2g for bring this up. I thin RD too had this in its pre Olympic 2012 issue .
He did received d Pierre de Coubertin medal in 1988 for demonstrating sportsmanship.
d de Coubertin medal has only been awarded 15 times since d 1964 Olympics.
I posted about dis man coz dat incident also involved 2 SG sailors who cld hv possibly lost their lives in d rough sea if not rescued in time.
One of whom went on to win medals for SG in other regional/international competitions. He now sits on d SNOC.
Lawrence Lemieux is still remembered in Canada n d sailing fraternity for his courage n self-sacrifice, but apparently few Sgreans do.
But it is not Singaporean's fault it seems, this news was not reported in the Singapore media as per the below link. and it was in a pre internet era...

Shaw Her was one of my classmates. Why no report? I only knew about it now. Singapore seems ungrateful. :spank: :spank: It's only an accident, nothing to be embarrassed about. :slapshead:

wonder if it is true that the IOC may consider taking out table tennis after the 2020 Olympics as reported in the papers.

Nope, not putting d blame on SGreans.
Interesting to note dis comment in d wiki's entry u posted - \"Notably, the rescue was never mentioned in the Singapore media because it was deemed an embarrassment for Singapore's Olympic effort.\"
Wondered if dat is a fair n true comment.tutormum:
me hv relatives who were in sailing for many years but hv nvr heard d incident mentioned too.Shaw Her was one of my classmates. Why no report? I only knew about it now. Singapore seems ungrateful. :spank: :spank: It's only an accident, nothing to be embarrassed about. :slapshead:
me knows there’s an unwritten rule for sailors/seafarers to come to d rescue of anyone in distress at sea when one sees or receives a distress signal, even if it necessitates deviating fr set course to do so. Thus can understand Lemieux's view dat others wld hv done d same.
Nonetheless, d apparent lack of public awareness of dis incident does raises some questions:
1. Did d involved sailors suppressed d incident? if so, why?
2. Did d msm really suppressed d incident in d interest of Olympic sport?,
3. Was a teachable lesson in sportsmanship lost, esp for younger sailors who may not already know d unwritten rule?
tutormum, maybe time to touch base again with ur old classmate who is still involved in sailing.

A new system was introduced to take effect from 2020 whereby d Summer Olympics
will consist of 25 core sports + 3 ‘floating sports’ with maximum events capped at 28 sports in total.
There were 26 sports at London 2012. Many other sports r lobbying to be included.
Existing sports can be dropped n new ones added by a simple majority.
So whether TT will still be an event in Summer Olympics depends very much on how strong ITTF n member countries can lobby for inclusion. -
I am not sure if I translated correctly from the chinese papers - baseball and rugby were dropped from 2012 olympics which explains why there were 26 instead of 28 games.
